TUKARAM CHAITANYA: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
TUKARAM CHAITANYA: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

Near Nanded (A city in the state of Maharashtra in India); there is a small place called Yehelgaon. There lived an extremely pious and illustrious Deshastha Yajurvedi Brahmin couple named Kashinathpant and Parvati. They did not have an issue.

After penance for some years; Parvati gave birth on Kartiki Ekadashi of shaka 1745 i.e. roughly 1823 AD; to a bright son as per the promise of Deity Shri Dattatreya, who had assured her in dream; that he would incarnate as her son.

They named him Tukaram.

Later he was named Tukaram Chaitanya by his guru; Swami Chinmayananda of Umarkhed. The other two disciples of Chinmayananda were Gocharswami and Shri Shewalkar.

Tukaram Chaitanya later became the spiritual guru of Brahmachaitanya Maharaj Gondavalekar; around 1860.

The Samadhi of Tukaram Chaitanya is in Yehelgaon and that of Chinmayananda is in Umarkhed.

I never came across any information about the life of Chinmayananda, Gocharswami, Shri Shewalkar, Shri Tukaram Chaitanya and Shri Brahmachaitanya; in any of my curricular books; during my education; till I passed my MD (Physiology).

I have written this small write up as a homage and tribute to Prof. K. V. Belsare; who wrote the biography of Shri Brahmachaitanya Maharaj Gondavlekar; and provided this extremely vital and valuable information to us. It is by virtue of reading this biography (though the ultimate control is of; GOD, cosmic consciousness, or SADGURU); that I got involved in NAMASMARAN and understood that:

1. India is unique in her greatest ever treasure of connection with God (the eternal immortal bliss, the absolute objective truth, the cosmic consciousness); through; thousand of her illustrious sons and daughters; the saints, prophets, seers and yogis.

2. In other words; India’s treasure is; eternal immortal bliss; personified throughout the history; over millennia.

3. The ultimate solace for any inhabitant of the universe; is said to be; the eternal immortal bliss; mentioned above. Nothing else; how much ever hyped; comes to rescue!

4. Hence; when people of the world; get exasperated and exhausted; by religious, intellectual, ideological and political conflicts and indiscriminate violence on the one hand; and indulgence that drains the spirit and erodes from within; on the other; and begin to desperately seek peace and harmony; they would certainly get it; in India.

5. This is also because; even as India may look sick and sultry; and be ridiculed and betrayed by her own inhabitants; from time to time; the places of pilgrimage; spread in nook and corner of India; ooze out and emanate ambrosia of eternal immortal bliss; and provide solace to every visitor; without any kind of discrimination!

6. The seekers of truth from any and every corner of the world; are not only bound to get the ambrosia of eternal immortal bliss, in India; but also; the inspiration of the holistic perspective, policies, plans, programs and their implementation; so much pivotal and vital in individual and universal blossoming i.e. holistic renaissance.

TWO VITAL QUESTIONS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
TWO VITAL QUESTIONS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

1. Why is it advised by a guru; that; we should withdraw from the urge of changing the world; and pay attention to improvement of self?
2. Why is it said that; “Everything works according to the wish of God”; and what is the social implication of this aphorism?

Why is it advised by a guru; that; we should withdraw from the urge of changing the world; and pay attention to improvement of self?

The self improvement here; implies the process of overcoming subjective whims and fancies.

Unless we work on the self improvement; we cannot see the world as it is. Hence; we cannot respond to the circumstances appropriately. In absence of self improvement; we generally respond; as per our gullibility, pettiness, prejudices, presumptions, biases, or varying proportion of all these.

Hence; we get dragged after deceptive perceptions of ours; and get disappointed or delirious; repeatedly; and remain far from inner satisfaction!

Self improvement; helps us to see the world as it is; and saves us; from being deception! It enables us to respond and appropriately to any situation; satisfactorily.
This can be understood also by the analogy of oxygen!

In airplanes it is rightly instructed; to first use the oxygen mask yourself and then help others; so that you can help the others; surely and maximally. Similarly; in absence of self improvement; we may die “spiritually” and won’t be able to help and/or change the world; appropriately, surely and maximally.

Why is it said that; “Everything works according to the wish of God”; and what is the social implication of this aphorism?

Everything “works”; according to the “wish” of God; simply means; the world does not function according to any individual’s “wish”; and not according to merely; the causes; deduced or invented by some of our ancestors; from all over the world!
This is because of the contribution of our other ancestors, who searched for (through their dedicated study, contemplation and experiments on themselves); the root cause; of the individual wishes, thoughts, feelings, passions, actions, metabolic processes; and for that matter; everything going on in the living and nonliving universe.
In the course of time; they did not discover or invent; but actually got merged with the root cause! The state of “being” they “experienced”; was variously termed as; realization of; self, God, nothingness, zero (shoonya), great zero (maha-shoonya), great cause (maha-karana), mukti, nirvana, samadhi, sthitapradnya avastha and amrutanubhava (experience of immortality and eternity).
They “experienced” that this state; unexplainable; by any words; is beyond; the human concepts (such as tangible cause and effect relationship), human existence and beyond matter, space and time. They “experienced this state as a root of everything; and hence the source of the “wish” of everything!

It is in this sense; that everything works according to the “wish” of God; even as the cause and effect relationship and its study are undeniably valid; till we experience the state of immortality!
Now regarding the implication; the universal dynamics actually embodies; chain of causes and effects; such as ultimate, penultimate and immediate.
God’s “wish” is an experience of the ultimate cause of all causes. If we are aware of it; then we can respond appropriately; to the penultimate and immediate causes, which perpetuate the personal and social evils; such as corruption, crimes, terrorism and wars.
However; if we ignore the role of penultimate and immediate causes; then we tend to become inert and irresponsible; and absolve ourselves and others; from the involvement in corruption, crimes, terrorism and wars.
Thus; the social implication of “Everything happens according to God’s wish” is; to reach the root or ultimate cause; become objective and selfless; and heal the root, penultimate and immediate causes of evils in personal and social life.

UNDERSTANDING MORE ABOUT NAMASMARAN: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
UNDERSTANDING MORE ABOUT NAMASMARAN: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

Jan 19, 2013
The process of NAMASMARAN goes on acquiring new dimensions. It goes on deepening and percolating in every system, every cell and in fact; every molecule of the body; and gradually becomes a core of our total personality and controlling center of our behavior.

Later; we begin to understand that:
1. NAMASMARAN; is a universal process; and we get associated with it; due to our eternal relationship with our GURU (God, BRAHMA, NAMA or objective or cosmic self).
2. The cosmic consciousness (guru) is eternal and the Darwinian evolution and enlightenment of an individual consciousness; are contingents. Guru guides and motivates millions of people towards NAMASMARAN; thus blossoming; their instincts, emotions, intelligence and perspective! This repeats itself from time to time; in different parts of the world.
3. GURU (cosmic consciousness) may vary; in external appearance and language and/or semantics. The disciples also may vary; in terms of where they come from; and which background they belong to. This relationship of a particular GURU and a particular disciple; is determined probably by the associations in seed forms; spread through several lives.
4. NAMASMARAN is a highway to the cosmic consciousness that transcends the dimension of time; and is created by the cosmic consciousness Himself! That is how; great sages, saints, seers and most of the enlightened gurus; and their billions of followers; have been practicing NAMASMARAN; from time immemorial! Hence it is said that NAMA given by a GURU has immense significance and importance.
5. Hence; it is erroneous to assume; that “my activity” of NAMASMARAN; would yield results; as per my expectations or anticipations; in personal or social life!
6. Actually the GURU gets NAMASMARAN done through me. Everything including global revolutions or universal cataclysms; are contingents; including obviously; “my activity” of NAMASMARAN; and “my enlightenment”!
7. Therefore it is said that we should practice NAMASMARAN for the sake of itself; only; and neither for petty gains nor for engendering social change; as per our subjective perspective.

UNEMPLOYMENT AND NAMASMARAN: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
UNEMPLOYMENT AND NAMASMARAN: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

At times; we feel that there should be NO explicit promotion of NAMASMARAN as; “readers may find it monotonous and repetitive”! What could be the reason for such a feeling? This is because; we are not serious enough about; our individual and universal problems and possible solutions for the same!

As a result of our casual approach; there is no interest, no insight and no conviction about the pivotal role of NAMASMARAN; in our individual and global life! We tend to just casually agree, superficially accept; and reluctantly approve; NAMASMARAN!

Is it not true that with casual approach; we cannot reach the root causes and holistic solutions; to the problems? Is it not true that with such casual approach we tend to accept ineffective or counterproductive piecemeal approaches and become insensitive, callous and even sadist? Is it not true that with casual approach in accepting or rejecting NAMASMARAN; we become phobic about the global challenge; and guilty about our uselessness? Is it not true that; as a result of casual approach; we become weak and fall prey to dirty politics and false claims of charlatans?

It is only after sincere and thorough scrutiny, trial and errors; that one comes to realize and grab; the opportunity to study, practice and promote NAMASMARAN, which is a universal solution to individual and global stress; caused by a variety of stressors; i.e. individual and social problems.

It is only after thorough scrutiny, trial and errors; that we realize that; NAMASMARAN is a panacea. NAMASMARAN involves individual and universal blossoming. NAMASMARAN embodies conquest of inner and outer evils. NAMASMARAN is the core of Total Stress Management. NAMASMARAN is the essence of superliving. NAMASMARAN is the key to holistic renaissance and ought to have top priority in life!

Hence; both true and sincere theists and true atheists; and people of all the religions and countries; have unwritten, common and intrinsic urge for eradicating unemployment and mal-employment; through holistic education (which includes inner growth and blossoming; and productive domain for self and social empowerment); that can eradicate unemployment and mal-employment (unproductive; counterproductive and socially harmful employment) on the one hand; and evils such as all the wastage, corruption and other malpractices; on the other!

They are convinced that; how much ever monotonous, repetitive and propagandist it may appear; NAMASMARAN being the fountainhead of individual and universal welfare; and already being prevalent world over in most religions; has to be promoted, popularized and universalized; with top priority; while being in its practice.

UNITY AND STRESS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
UNITY AND STRESS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

Uniting, organizing and working together are natural in young age. In fact; they are important steps in stress management!

Naturally; and usually; we in India; get united in group activities. Thus; in villages; these are activities around the village temple; such as fairs, bhajans and various festivals and in towns and cities; music, dance, theater, sports, elocutions and other entertainments.

As we grow; many of us get united; in business, industries, cooperative factories, cooperative banks, union activities, political activities and so on!

Latter we unite for the welfare of a school, village, region, language, caste, religion, science; or other issues such as memorials, statues and philanthropic or charity activities.

But some of us; get united around studying and solving social problems and bring about socioeconomic and political revolution. However; the problems are not simple! Sometimes they are of immediate pertinence, such as accidents, disasters, crimes and coercive land acquisition or rehabilitation; but in other instances; they are long standing, wide spread and deep rooted; such as caste system, coercive traditions, and unjust laws. Many times the problems are even deeper, perplex and intricate!

We gradually realize; that our solutions; even though honest; are ad hoc, palliative and sometimes even sectarian; and not; radical, holistic and hence are unsatisfactory and ineffective.

As we mature; we realize that our SWADHARMA i.e. choicest activity in our life; is to explore and manifest; the hidden unity of the universe; and the harmony and complementarity; in the already existing organizations and institutions; through the study and practice; of Total Stress Management i.e. superliving, (the core of which is NAMASMARAN).

VIOLENCE AND GITA: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
VIOLENCE AND GITA: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

One of the misconceptions about Gita; is that; “Gita advocates violence”.

If we read all the 18 chapters carefully; then it would be clear that Gita considers; any activity in personal and social life; conducive to forgetting of one’s immortal ‘true self’; is ADHARMA; i.e. violence; towards self and others. The word “PRANASHYATI” is used in 6th chapter, 9th chapter and also 18th chapter; to clearly imply this meaning.

In practical life also; forgetting one’s larger self (that includes our bond of love with; father, mother, brother, sister, spouse, teacher, friend and society); is associated with; overtly mean, mindless, individualistic, ungrateful, cruel, brutal, barbaric, maniacal and indiscriminately destructive behavior (ADAHRMA or violence)!

Gita asks us to live; in remembrance and latter; realization of our immortal true self; applicable only to all human beings; but all beings; so that; our behavior remains oriented and conducive to (individual and global) self realization. This is DHARMA. When we look at it from a particular individual’s point of view; with reference to his or her particular skills, expertise and aptitude; in specific context; then it is called SWADHARMA.

Gita teaches us to participate in; ‘DHARMYA YUDDHA’ and “kill” the inner and outer forces opposing this ADHARMA or violence! It is DHARMYA-not DHARMA (2.31 and 2.33). It means one, which culminates in DHARMA; or is in accordance with DHARMA.

A person is called degenerate and dead when his or her conscience is dead. A true disease of an individual; is his or her trivialization or vulgarization. This happens when he or she gets disoriented and lost from his or her true self. Gita enlightens and empowers us; to annihilate this true death! Gita never dwells on any ideology, religion, race, region, nation, cult or a sect; but catalyzes our ascent; to our immortal and blissful true (universal) self, the greatest and ultimate goal; we can ever aspire for!

VISHNU SAHASRANAM: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
VISHNU SAHASRANAM: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

The concept of reorienting to our true self is old, but ever fresh and ever inspiring. The reorientation is followed by reuniting with our true self. In India there are hymns addressed to different forms of the Almighty (cosmic consciousness) and included in their daily routine by the seers, and many have written commentaries on Vishnusahasranam.

Vishnusahasranam is a world famous hymn from the great epic Mahabharata; and incorporates around one thousand names of Lord Vishnu (The omnipresent Lord). These names actually are descriptive terms; to give us the insight of our existence, our true self, the universe, the cosmic consciousness; and dynamic interactions amongst these; the eternal orchestra!

If we learn Vishnusahasranam; at early age; may not understand the meaning initially; but as we go through the experiences of life; we gradually blossom in every way; with Vishnusahasranam; and then start exploring and appreciating the enlivening insights of our self.

My feeble effort in this direction is published in Marathi with the title, SAHASRANETRA and is uploaded for free download.

VISION STRESS & DREAMS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
VISION STRESS & DREAMS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

It is usual that we get enchanted by the vision or dreams of happier and better life. There are many, who predict a future of heaven on earth.

But as we grow older; we witness the apparent dominance of the indiscriminate, malevolent, malicious and vicious violence and crimes; and start doubting such vision and dreams; depicted in religious, philosophical and creative literature, poetry and movies and the power of divinity!

Is there any sense in the affirmation the victory of good over evil? Is there any rationale in glorification of “good” and condemnation of “bad”; as repeated in sermons; given in schools, colleges and elsewhere?

Are justice, peace, brotherhood and so on; mere emotional outbursts; of illusory or subjective nature; of some unrealistically sensitive individuals?

Some people may argue that; our stress is because; we can see only a small fraction, in our life time, of the vision or dreams, of a global mega process; spread over millennia; involving many generations; all over the world. Naturally; our vision of the global mega process; being a fraction and hence incomplete; appears to keep eluding us; producing stress!

According them; “the vision of unity or at least the harmony and amity; amongst spiritualism and materialism, theism and atheism; and such different ideologies, races, religions, regions, castes etc; become a reality, in which we also become “contributing catalysts”, if we grow from within; and be one with the “field”, in this global mega process is “contingent”!

Can NAMASMARAN (jap, jaap, jikra, sumiran, simaran i.e. remembering God’s name or one’s true self); help in such individual and global blossoming? Many visionaries say so!

REACHING A PLATEAU AFTER BARIATRIC SURGERY
Weight loss can be tricky. We can become victims of our own success. When you are able to lower your calorie intake on a consistent basis and lose weight, you will most likely reach a plateau. That plateau where the scale just seems to be stubborn and stuck at the same number for weeks at a time. Our body does this when calories are restricted because the metabolism begins to slow down to match the calorie intake. When you hit a plateau it is easy to become psychologically demoralized and begin to question the diet, hard work and sacrifice. Do not panic. This is a normal phenomena with losing weight and is a natural part of the weight loss process.
Following weight loss surgery, patients may lose weight fairly rapidly at first and then as time passes the weight loss becomes more gradual. Commonly, weight will stabilize at about 18 months after Roux en Y gastric bypass and duodenal switch. During these 18 months weight loss does not follow a predictable trend, but can be erratic with alternating periods of significant weight loss followed by no weight loss. Charting this weight loss may give the appearance of a stairway. It is not uncommon for patients to question why their weight loss has stalled at times and wonder if they are doing something wrong or if the surgery has not worked for them. This same trend can be seen after LAGB, however the weight loss will be more gradual and steady, averaging 5-10 lbs per month but continuing upto 3 yrs. Plateaus may occur if the band is not tightened, and therefore if this happens, the patient should consult with their surgeon for possibly a band adjustment.
Day to day or even week to week, fluctuations in weight loss occur due to many factors beyond just loss of fat mass. Water weight is probably the most common cause of this variability. This depends upon one's hydration status. Other factors besides fat mass that may result in inaccurate weights are current contents of the GI tract, gaining muscle mass and menstrual cycle in females. It is , thus recommended that patients should not weigh themselves too frequently. Exercise frequency and intensity may result in weight loss plateaus. An increase in meal frequency to high grazing or a decrease in frequency by starving during day and binge eating at night may also reduce one's ability to lose weight.
For surgeries that have malabsorptive component, the GI tract will adapt overtime to its new anatomic change. This adaptation may allow for better absorption of the consumed food, especially fats, reducing the benefits of surgery. Unfortunately nothing short of a further surgery can avert the adaptation effect. However, adhering to small meals high in protein may limit this effect. Anatomic factors exist which may limit one's ability to lose weight. With the RYGB, the size of the gastric pouch may change overtime. If it enlarges, it will accomodate larger meals. In addition, anastomotic dilation between stomach pouch may allow quicker emptying of the pouch reducing its effect on satiety and potential weight loss. Once dilation occurs, they cannot be reversed, and correction can only be obtained through surgical revision. With gastric band, the stoma may widen due to weight loss , at which point the band should be tightened with an adjustment. Weight loss can be resumed after this. For the same reason, after GB ,a patient should not drink during meals. This activity will result in more rapid transition of solid food from the gastric pouch eliminating the sensation of fullness and resulting in ingestion of larger portions.
In general it is normal to have periods of plateaus through all phases of weight loss after surgery. Recognize this plateaus as being normal. Don't focus on the scales too often. Adhering to the basic rules of eating correctly and exercising regularly may shorten the duration of a plateau and lead ultimately to greater longterm weight loss, improved balance, improved self confidence, and overall improved sense of well being.

WAKING BEFORE SLEEPING: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
WAKING BEFORE SLEEPING: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

It is true that we wake up after sleep. But here, the word “waking” is used to mean rising from the slumber of superficiality and pettiness; and the word “sleeping” is used to mean death of our body.

We are blessed with our beautiful but mortal body; for self realization; i.e. the opportunity to wake up from our delirious slumber; and experience the process of self realization and simultaneous blossoming; of one and all.

Practice of NAMASMARAN; advised unanimously by immortal sages; is a golden opportunity; irrespective of our religion, race, age, sex, occupation, nationality etc; for self realization and winning the race with the time; and “wake up” before our body falls; in “sleep”!

So; should we assert this golden opportunity; to use our mortal body, consciousness and everything; to experience the greatest ever phenomenon; of being one with the immortal, omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent i.e. “waking up before we sleep”; through NAMASMARAN; right from now; or worry about deterioration, decomposition and destruction of our bodies!
