Role of Diet in Hypertension
What is hypertension?

Hypertension is high blood pressure, medically defined as - Blood pressure which remains consistently high and not just once / twice is termed hypertension.

Blood pressure is measured in two parameters. One is systolic (upper) and second is diastolic (lower), 120/80 mm of mercury, is the normal reading. But a lot of doctors consider 140/90 mm of mercury within the normal range in young adults.

Causes:

• In most cases the cause for high blood pressure is not known.
• Familial heredity.
• Stress.
• Kidney pathology
• Hormonal imbalance.
• More than 80% of hypertension is "Essential hypertension" for which no cause can be found.

Complications:
• Stroke
• Heart attack.
• Damage to kidney.

Sign and symptoms:

• Majority cases of hypertension are detected accidentally as many are asymptomatic.
• Headaches on exertion or from sun.
• Chest pain or tightness.
• Palpitations.
• Tingling and numbness
• Muscle cramps.
• Nosebleeds and profuse perspiration are rare symptoms.

Some dietary tips to manage hypertension:

• Cut down salt (common table salt) intake in your diet; do not exceed more then 2 to 2.5 gm a day.
• In case of severe hypertension do not consume salt at all till the blood pressure lowers down. Later you can start with balanced diet with low salt and fats in your diet.
• Add very little salt to food; do not add salt to cooked food.
• Avoid other sources of salts like- baking powder and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), monosodium glutamate and sodium benzoate. These are commonly known as Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, onion salt, garlic salt and buillon salt.
• Avoid salt-preserved foods like ketchups, sauces, pickles, canned and processed foods.
• In case of severe hypertension avoid foods rich in sodium like- milk, egg white, meat, poultry, fish, green leafy vegetables, beet root, radish, carrot, cauliflower, lotus stem, pulses, spices like cumin seeds etc. Later when blood pressure lowers down gradually can resume fresh fruits and vegetables.
• Consumption of Bindweed (Shankhapushpi) is recommended, is beneficial in hypertension
• Consume food rich in magnesium:
• Animal foods: sea food - shellfish - crab, oyster etc are rich source of magnesium but are a good source of fats too hence should be avoided or consumed little and not more then once a week.
• Plant foods: Green leafy vegetables are best source of magnesium and they are devoid of fats and cholesterol.
• Sea plants like Japanese sea plants are very good source of magnesium.
• Nuts- ground nuts, walnut, almond and cashew nuts are most concentrated source of magnesium but should be consumed in a very limited quantity as they are high in fats. Nuts like ground nuts and rice bran oils are high in cholesterol, hence should be avoided.
• Magnesium is also obtained from Whole grains - wheat, brown rice and millets.
• Other food source of magnesium are peas, lotus stem, pulses, legumes and oil seeds.
• Increase calcium intake:-
• Animal foods: milk and sea food - shellfish - crab, oyster etc are good source of calcium and a good source of fats too hence should be avoided or consumed little and not more then once a week, you can have semi-skimmed or skimmed milk instead of whole fat milk.
• Nuts- ground nuts, walnut, almond and cashew nuts are also a good source of calcium and considerably high in fats so should be consumed in a very limited quantity as they are high in fats.
• Green leafy vegetables - mustard leaves, broccoli, fenugreek leaves, collards, kale, turnip greens, colocasia leaves and bok choy or Chinese cabbage are good sources of calcium.
• Whole grains - wheat, brown rice and millets especially finger millet is high in calcium.
• Certain fruits like - custard apple and banana are high in calcium.
• Other food sources are peas, lotus stem, pulses, legumes and oil seeds.
• Reduce intake of diet rich in saturated fats e.g. meat, eggs, milk products, cheese, butter etc.
• Avoid foods rich in cholesterol: ground nut oil, ghee, butter, whole milk, eggs, lard (fats derived from pig meat), tallow (fats derived from goat or sheep mutton), oily fish, meats and red meat - all non-vegetarian food contain cholesterol in varied amount.
• Avoid non-vegetarian food especially red meat.
• Increase intake of foods that contain PUFA's (poly unsaturated fatty acids): flax / linseed oil is the richest source of PUFA's. Other oils that contain PUFA's are safflower oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, maize oil, sesame oil, rich bran oil, ground nut oil, mustard oil and olive oil. As all oils are high in fats, its consumption should be limited. The intake of oils should not exceed 20gms a day.
• Consume whole grain cereals and whole pulses.
• Take high fiber diet - whole grains, bran, oat, green leafy vegetables, peas, beans, potatoes, raw vegetables, salads, dried fruits and fresh fruits.
• Eat fruits and vegetables with the skin.
• Cut down the intake of sugar and other sweeteners.
• Replace whole milk with semi-skimmed or skimmed milk.
• Avoid fat-rich portions of flesh foods. Instead have lean meat.
• Avoid fat-rich desserts and fried snacks like cakes, pastries, puddings etc
• Instead of frying food boil, steam, grill or roast food.
• Avoid coffee and caffeinated drinks.

Note:
• Quit smoking and alcohol.
• Reduce weight if obese
• Walk every day briskly for at least 30 minutes.
• Meditation & yoga will help to reduce and tackle stress.
• Take medicines regularly and go for regular checkups.

Inclusion of Ayurveda in Primary Education is Essential
Inclusion Of Ayurveda In Primary Education

- Professor, Vd. M. P. Prabhudesai
Bhaisheb sawant Ayurved Mahavidyalaya,
Sawantwadi, Dist.- Sindhudurga, Pin – 416510.
Maharashtra, INDIA.

[ There was an All India Level Convention arranged on the subject – 'Ayurveda - Education & Research', in Coimbtore (India) in July 1991. It was sponsored by Gujarat Ayurveda University (Jamnagar), Central Council of Indian Medicine, L.S.P.S.S. (Coimbtore), & A. V. R. Foundation (Coimbtore). The thoughts delivered by Dr. M. P. Prabhudesai were accepted by the convention in form of resolution, which was passed unanimously. Those thoughts are being elaborated as follows --].
Dear & honorable audience / readers, before going to plan the education - policy for the under-graduate & post-graduate courses of Ayurveda, it is my earnest request to go through the following facts.
Our present educational policy is based totally on the guidelines laid down by the Western educationalists (including Lord McCauley), which were influenced by the political elements present before our independence. But, one should never forget that there was 'The Best System of Education' available in our India since good old days. Not only that, we had our own best universities like Takshashila, Nalanda which imparted best quality education, even to foreign students. Unfortunately, this fact has been totally forgotten / ignored by the present educationalists & by the political leaders as well, who always try to enforce 'their own'(?) guidelines. The nations, which are always, alert about the greatness of their own country, their own tradition, heritage & culture and self-respect can flourish & progress like anything in a very short period, e.g. Israel, Japan. Instead, even after 44 years of Independence, we Indians are totally dependent upon the Westerns, almost for everything. A total period of 25 years (??) was elapsed from independence, to get Government – recognition to Ayurveda, after which the B.A.M.S. (Ayurvedacharya) course was adopted by various universities in India. This recognition was thought about only after the realization of Ayurveda-awareness aroused in Western-countries. This is one example of our typical Indian (and not Bharatiya)-mentality
At present, Ayurvedic education is approved at college-level. Unfortunately, first five-six months of the student admitted for Ayurvedic course, are wasted simply in getting accustomed to the Ayurvedic basic principles & the specific terminology. They are never been taught anything about Ayurveda up to twelfth standard, which is supposed to be the minimum basic qualification to get admission to B.A.M.S. The students get worried about, when they come across the names of Ayurvedic scientists like Charakacharya, Sushrutacharya, Vagbhatacharya etc. & similarly, the basic principles like Tridosha Siddhant, Panchamahabhoot Siddhant etc. During ten years of my teaching experience (1977–1986) in Ayurvedic colleges in Mumbai, I have experienced that, due to the fact mentioned above, many scholar students have left the course to seek admission for another course and in this way, Ayurveda has lost the talent.
This never happens in case of the students who get admission to a course (other than Ayurveda), related with modern science. Explanation of this fact is quite clear. The student is familiar with the basic principles & the terminology of modern science, which he knows even from his primary education. So, he can easily 'digest' the courses like M.B.B.S., Engineering, Science-subjects, Commerce etc. when he gets admission there.
In present situation, there seems only one solution for this, and that is ---- to include introduction of the basic principles of Ayurveda along with the concerned scientists & philosophers, very from the primary education, that too, step by step.
It is assumed that the national policies regarding various subjects, including educational one, should be based on the culture & heritage, social-lifestyle, geographical situation and similar other factors which are concerned with that particular country. While experiencing the 'present yearly changing pattern' of the education-system prevalent in India, it is quite evident that this assignation is not followed at all. There may be various reasons behind this situation. But it is regretted to observe that nobody, either any political or any social leader has ever tried to seek any solution and to follow it, honestly. According to me, the cause of this fact can be our 'traditional slave-psychology'. Our so-called thinkers are always worried about the western scientist's approval (??) / criticism, even if they decide to think anything new to the westerns. That will be the "holiest day" when our own thinkers will be out of this psychological-dependence. It will not be out of the subject, to quote here the famous sher ---
IwX hr H$mo H$a ~wb§X BVZm Ho$
ha VH$ara Ho$ nhbo, IwXm IwX ~§Xo go nyN>o -
"" ~Vm Voar aOm Š`m h¡ ?''
If we leave our inferiority-complex and if we try to revise and follow our own system of education based on Ayurveda and other Indian Philosophical-Sciences (Darshan-Shastras) that are supplementary & closely related with our social, moral, psychological, cultural and geographical conditions; then only our 'Bharat' will shine like anything, always ahead, among the world.
Ayurveda, our own medical science is totally relevant with our Hindu-culture, Hindu-lifestyle & Hindu-religion. (The word 'Hindu' used here implies – An ideal living-style matching with the Indian-culture; and not the present constricted meaning made famous by our politicians.) Even though, the students completing their primary, secondary or even college education are familiar only with the basic principles of modern science; but they never know anything about the philosophical foundation upon which our Indian Sciences are based. On the contrary, it is seen that 'the thinkers' in India go on jesting & criticizing this ancient Indian Medical Science, of being based on imaginary and strange philosophy that has no practical background & without any research. Naturally, the younger generation of students is more attracted towards Modern Medical Science that has got world-wide reputation & dignity, easier access in getting Govt. facilities, dazzling background, propaganda of its researches, which claim to give quicker results in treating diseases & so on. That is why, the student who has passed twelfth standard & who is inclined to get admission for a medical course; tries hard for the M.B.B.S. course on top priority. When it becomes impossible to get admission there or for similar courses based on modern science, then he becomes helpless & gets admission, reluctantly, to the Ayurvedic course, i.e. B.A.M.S., where, as narrated in the beginning, he experiences totally different atmosphere, as Ayurveda is based on entirely different basic principles, not known to him before.
Now we will go through few examples proving my thoughts -----
1. In the present system of education, the student learning in primary school knows about the square meal, vitamins, calories etc. as essential information about diet. But he never knows that, according to Ayurveda, 'all eatables available in the world are divisible in six tastes (Rasa) and our daily meal should contain all the six tastes in a particular proportion'. He may know this basic rule, only after getting admission to Ayurvedic course, that too after twelfth standard. Otherwise this rule may remain unknown to him for his whole life. In reality, I do not think, any other science, except Ayurveda, has ever thought about 'the diet' in all respects. At the time, when the western world had progressed (??) in consuming roasted meat instead of eating it raw, we Bharatiyas used to have delicious & dainty dishes containing all six tastes. In fact, the detailed description about dietetics regarding – when / where / how / what & how much to eat, who should eat, not only that but why to eat; is so elaborately available, with due explanation, in Ayurvedic texts that if one tries to write in details, thousands of pages will be insufficient, or if one tries to speak, he may require many days to explain in details. Even then, there is no any single reference about 'the Ayurvedic view of diet' in present primary or further education.
2. The student learning in primary education knows 'the Darwin's theory of evolution'. Similarly, he knows various hypothesise regarding the origin of this globe. But it is almost rare for him to know 'the Prakriti-Purush Siddhant' described in Bharatiya Sankhya-philosophy or the basic Bharatiya ideas about Srishti-Utpatti described according to 'Pilu-Paka', 'Peethar-Paka' and 'Dwyanuk-Tryanuk' Siddhantas are never heard.
3. The names of the modern scientists that give a nice tongue-exercise while pronunciation like Newton, Luis Pasture, Graham Bell, Einstein, Madam Curie, Galileo, Harvey etc. are well-known to the primary students, along with their topics of research as well. But they do not have mere acquaintance with the Bharatiya scientists like Charakacharya, Sushrutacharya, Vagbhatacharya, Bhaskaracharya, Kanad Maharshi, Aryabhatta (this is the only exception, due to our patriotic scientist, The President of Bharat at present, Dr. Abdul Kalam, who named the satellite), Dalhan, Dridhabala, Madhavacharya, Bhrigu etc. The Vedic Mathematics, which aroused an excitement in the western world due to its speed competing with the computer, we remained inert about it for so many days. Many such examples can be quoted.
My suggestion regarding inclusion of Ayurvedic Principles in the syllabus of primary education may have a few objections: ~
• Originally, all the Ayurvedic literature is in 'Sanskrit' language; so it may prove to be very difficult either to learn or to teach it.
The solution for this problem can be as follows – the teachers of primary schools should undergo a special orientation-course to learn basic principles of Ayurveda, which should be explained in the regional language after keeping the original terminological Sanskrit words as they are. Similarly, the Sanskrit-language, which is an optional subject at secondary-school level, should be made compulsory from primary level. It is my earnest suggestion that the Sanskrit should be approved as our National Language by making special necessary amendments in our constitution. (So that it may be possible to nullify the opposition of the South Indians to the present national language, i.e. Hindi). Then after, I would strongly propose to upgrade the Sanskrit Language to become the international language, as the scientists (especially the Western Ones) have accepted it as a language that can be easily & totally fed to computers.
• The other objection will be – will the Westerns understand, whatever we try to teach about Ayurveda & other Bharatiya Philosophy in the specific terminology and will they approve it?
My answer to this query is – we need not worry about that. If at all the Westerns are keenly interested to know our Oriental Sciences they have to get accustomed to our Sanskrit language & terminology as well. If it is inevitable to learn Russian, German or French when our Bharatiya students wish to get further education in Russia, Germany or France, then why should we waste our energy to try to translate our inherited wisdom in their language (which is almost always impossible, due to the want of clarification of the real / implied meaning), to make them understand our science? We 'Indians' unnecessarily make a bugbear of English language. We feel helpless if we do not have mastery over it. But it is my own experience that English is not much honored in Europe except England. It will not be out of track if I narrate my experience regarding this.
In May 1989, I was invited to read my research-paper in The World Congress of Yoga & Ayurveda, in Italy. Then there was a study-tour in Switzerland, Germany, Holland, France & England. During the whole tour, I experienced that very few people could speak or understand English, except at the international airports, at starred hotels and in England itself. In the roadside restaurants or in coffeehouses we had to convey our message through gesticulations by hand and the people were proud & alert regarding their own language. During lunch-recess we had been in a library in Rome. After going through the register, we asked the librarian, "Don't you have any English books here?" and she burst out angrily, "Why you want English books? You better learn our Italian language & you will get the whole knowledge you want, which, perhaps, may not be available in English." What a live & burning pride for her own language and her own nation! And we Indians (not Bharatiyas or Hindustanis) are still to fix a single name for our country!!!
• There might be one more objection – Ayurveda is not based only on axiom, so does not have any practical approach. The Tridoshas (i.e. Vat, Pitta, & Kapha) and Pancha-Mahabhootas described in it, cannot be demonstrated individually & practically. On the contrary, the modern medicine is practical-based science. Various bacteria (that are responsible for diseases, according to this science), the blood & its components, various invasive & non-invasive diagnostic techniques etc. can be perceived through our sensory organs. If this is the fact, then why to learn Ayurveda?
If one goes through the basic principles of Ayurveda with minute observation, the answer is quite evident. The 'Pratyaksha Pramana' ("Aj§ à{V' which means BpÝÐ`Jå`, i.e. axiom) is accepted also by Ayurveda. But according to it, its pervasion through our sense organs is very limited, while the real knowledge remains beyond the capacity of our sense organs & that is unlimited.
"àË`j§ {h Aën§, AZën§ AàË`j§Ÿ&' - Chraka Samhita.
This is one of the basic principles of Ayurveda. So that, Ayurveda has accepted two more Pramanas, i.e. AZw_mZ (means inference) & AmámonXoe (means eãXàm_mÊ` i.e. admonition by authorized seers); out of which 'inference' is accepted, to some extent, by the modern medicine. But, all the Basic Bharatiya Darshan Shastras also accept the third one, i.e. admonition & Ayurveda is no way an exception to this. In fact, according to Bharatiya philosophy, Anumana is superior to Pratyaksha & Aptopadesha is supposed to be the supreme one. This is simply a philosophical explanation.
But one may agree that, though not perceivable, the presence of Tridoshas (i.e. Vata, Pitta & Kapha) either in natural or unnatural state, can easily identified with the help of the guidelines laid down by Ayurveda. It is always experienced practically, that proper treatment given in various diseases (due to the vitiated state of Tridoshas), according to the Aptopadesha, relieves the patient from diseased state. In certain diseases where modern medicine falls short in curing them, like jaundice, urinary stones, asthma, rheumatic disorders, various digestive disorders, certain female-specific diseases, some types of cancer etc., Ayurveda certainly proves to be better in giving successful results, that too, without any surgical intervention. If this fact is proved, the ultimate inference that could be drawn is – 'inclusion of basic principles of Ayurveda in primary education is a must'.
While narrating the rules for maintenance of health, Ayurveda has thought about 'the psyche' (the body) & 'the mind' individually. The rules regarding physical health are described under the heading "{XZM`m©'(the daily regimen) & "F$VwM`m©' (the seasonal regimen), while the rules regarding mental health are described under the heading "gX²d¥Îm' (the daily behavior). If, our own ancient medical science i.e. Ayurveda, having such a nice background, is included in the primary education, our students & because of them their guardians as well, will have an introduction with our real Bharatiya thoughts, will improve their health and at the same time, I am quite confident that only Ayurveda will be an additional asset to get the motto of W.H.O., i.e. ' health to all', in reality.
'Mass-immunization' is compulsorily undertaken everywhere, with investment of so many crores of currency, to implement the above motto of W.H.O. But, it is realized that in the idea of 'health' only 'body' is taken into consideration. It is observed that, due to various vaccinations & successful (??) treatment against various diseases, the average length of human-life seems to be elongated; but it will be self-deception to declare that the human-health is improving. Because, majority of the chronically diseased patients disagree to live with 'such life dependent on mouthful of medicines'.
To my mind, the above motto of W.H.O. may turn into reality, only if, Ayurveda is included in primary education & daily and seasonal regimen and behavior is strictly observed according to it; because the basic aim of Ayurveda is, to gain not only elongated but also disease-free healthy life. This may be clarified by following example –_wI (the mouth) is under influence of Kapha dosha, according to Ayurveda. The eatables that are bitter or astringent in taste, control Kapha dosha from getting increased, but sweet eatables help Kapha to increase. Once this secret is known, the students along with the whole community, will stop using tooth-powders / pastes of the well-known multinational companies and because of this only precaution, many of the teeth complaints that are getting increased day by day, would be prevented.
In our good-old literature, we read that the saints & the kings in ancient days could live for some thousands of years, even though there were no any vaccinations or the modern amenities available. This was possible only because of observing the daily & seasonal regimen along with daily behavior according to Ayurveda.
Ayurveda states that 'Sadvritta- palan' (ethical behavior) is essential for healthy mental state and I am quite sure that if this is included in primary education, in Ayurvedic manner, many of the unethical deeds, seen increasing during present days among the younger generation, will be certainly checked.
In this way, if the education of Ayurveda, which is supplementary for the sound state of physical as well as mental health of the community & which forms the basis for the student seeking admission in Ayurvedic college, is included at primary level; then, I am quite confident that, the talented class of students, which used to turn towards Ayurveda unwillingly & helplessly, will give its first preference to Ayurveda with due interest & willingness.

"Wishing best of health to all"

Rights for Zerona Non Invasive Laser Liposuction and Weight Loss Program Secured by AVI Pharma in Southeast Asia
Zerona Low level non invasive laser liposuction (http://erchonia.asia/index.htm) , used for body slimming also emerges as an innovative weight loss program (http://erchonia.asia/index.htm) and ideal way to balance appetite hormones. AVI Pharma recently gained the rights for the program in Southeast Asia, including India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The procedure is US FDA approved.

(PRWEB) October 16, 2010

Zerona is a low-level non invasive laser liposuction for body slimming that also emerges as an innovative weight loss program. Together with or independent of very low calorie VLCD Diet, HCG injections or other weight loss programs. It rotates around the waist, hips and thighs, forcing the fat cells to empty in a matter of weeks. There are no incisions, no downtime and no need for anesthesia. The fat is reabsorbed by the body through natural detoxification channel via liver and lymphatic system. But there is no substitute of eating right and healthy life style. This liposuction laser mechanism has to work hand in hand with lifestyle modification.

Good news is that Food and Drug Administration just cleared Zerona for "body slimming" in doctors' offices to reveal a thinner body with no incisions or needles. The Zerona is the first non-invasive aesthetic device to receive FDA market clearance for circumferential reduction of the waist, hips, and thighs.

The obesity epidemic continues unabated with no cure in sight. This is adversely affecting social harmony and economic productivity in developing as well as developed countries. Since obesity is mainly dependent on the size of the fat cell not just the number of fat cells .It is important to see the good side of the adipocytes too. Usually thought to be a poisonous inflammatory reservoir of fat and toxins the good side of adipocytes is missed or misinformed not only to the population but also the medical fraternity. Destroying the fat cells can be dangerous.

For long we have been trying to reveal the real mystery around adipocytes. Now fat cells are not just considered as inactive storage form for excess calories. We can consider adipose tissue as one of the largest endocrine gland in the body responsible for release of multiple hormones and sending signals to target tissues all over the body to regulate fatty acid metabolism, growth, puberty, healing, temperature control, disease-fighting ,aging and hunger mechanism. More than 20 hormones, both orexigenic and anorexigenic, have been identified. After crossing the blood-brain barrier, they reach their main site of action located in several hypothalamic areas and interact to balance satiety and hunger. One of the most significant advances in this matter has been the discovery of Leptin. This hormone plays fundamental roles in the control of appetite and in regulating energy expenditure.

The metabolism of adipocytes and gastric epithelial cells is closely linked to food intake and energy storage. The coordinated secretion of adipose and gastric leptins ensures proper management of food processing and energy storage. Leptin also regulates the activities of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism, e.g., AMP-activated protein kinase and stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1, and also interacts with insulin signaling in the brain. Low levels of leptin indicating food deprivation and depleted fat stores have been identified as the strongest signals to induce adaptive biological actions such as increased energy intake and reduced energy expenditure. The fall in leptin during fasting mediates hyperphagia and suppresses thermogenesis, thyroid and reproductive hormones, and immune system. On the other hand, rising leptin levels in the fed state stimulate fatty acid oxidation, decrease appetite, and limit weight gain. Because of this LEPTIN, is often known as the fat switch.

Similar changes can be observed when the adipocytes are damaged or destroyed by various invasive and non invasive slimming techniques. Most protocols for slimming and aesthetics involves destruction or removal of the adipocytes. This destruction of fat cells without diet control or exercise can stimulate the adipocytes elsewhere in body to get bigger and store more fat and ultimately non aesthetic results. Another danger is that losing fat cells may lower leptin levels and increase leptin resistance, signaling to the brain to eat more. In concert with other signals from the gut and metabolically active tissues, low leptin levels trigger powerful activation of multiple peripheral and brain systems to restore energy balance. It is not just neurons in the arcuate nucleus, but many other brain systems involved in finding potential food sources, smelling and tasting food, and learning to maximize rewarding effects of foods, that are affected by low leptin. Food restriction and fat depletion thus lead to a "hungry" brain, preoccupied with food.

Among multiple hormones that fat cells secrete another example is ADIPONECTIN, which helps manage metabolism. It enhances fatty acid oxidation and insulin sensitivity, in part by stimulating AMP-activated protein kinase phosphorylation and activity in liver and muscle. Moreover, Adiponectin decreases body fat by increasing energy expenditure and lipid catabolism. It is also known that Adiponectin release decreases when the fat cells are oversize. On the other hand oversize fat cells also become resistant to Leptin itself explaining why very obese individuals may have high leptin but are resistant to it,very similar to insulin resistance.
Ideally the best slimming & weight loss program to get maximum advantage from the endocrine fat cells is to shrink the fat cells without damaging them. This not only will increase leptin sensitivity but will also increase production of Adiponectin. This goal can be achieved by a non invasive protocol using low level laser liposuction which deflates/shrinks the fat cells without damaging the adipocytes and maintaining the endocrine function.

GARLIC PREVENTS CANCER,ARTHRITIS,ATHEROSCLEROSIS,DIABETIC HARM ON HEART
Garlic (Allium sativum) has been found to exhibit several health benefits, including inhibiting enzymes involved in lipid synthesis, decreasing platelet aggregation, preventing lipid peroxidation, and increasing antioxidant status. From the ancient time eating of Garlic and onion has been demonstrated to reduce bad lipid in our blood leading to prevention of Atherosclerosis of Brain,Kidney Eye and Cardiac microvessels and thus very helpful in these lipid induced hyoertension and related disease of kidney,Brain,Eye and Heart and now a daysit has been shown that Garlic reduced immediate rise of blood sugar in Diabetes after food thus preventing Diabetes bad effect on heart and other organs.

Garlic has got an unique antioxidant property of reducing pain of inflammatory or immunological diorder related pain of Joints, bone and muscles,it is very impotant to heal osteoarthritic changes of Knee ,hip and small joints and rheumatoid arthritis and thus very much helpful to ameliorate Bony joints inflammatory or degenerative pains.

By recent study Ohio state UniversityComprehensive cancer research centre it has been demonstrated that Garlic protects us from cancer induced by some contaminated water or componds which enter in our body by sudden cnsuption or by food adulteration or by mistake these compund by process of nitrosation produce carcinogens,The level of carcinogen found in urine of a patient is less who counsume good garlic as shown in their urine level ,more garlic less carcinogen in urine.thus garlic prevents cancer beside giving us a spicy test to our food stuffs.
Garlic oil can protect against diabetic cardiomyopathy, a form of heart disease in people with diabetes, reveals a novel study.Garlic has an enormous potential to prevent cardiomyopathy, which is a leading cause of death amongst diabetics.
It works by controlling the abnormally high sugar levels that occur during diabetes on a common basis. The study, conducted by researchers from Taiwan, took the help of a few diabetic laboratory rats for the research. The rats were fed either garlic oil or corn oil by the researchers. They were then observed to see which oil led to better prevention of cardiomyopathy.Overall, diabetes related cardiac dysfunctions in the rats were dose-dependently relieved with garlic oil.The changes found in the rats were related to the antioxidant properties of the oil, the researchers found.20 contributing substances found in oil,on analysis, almost 20 substances that may contribute to this protective effect were found in garlic oil.
"Our results show that garlic oil supplementation for diabetic rats leads to several alterations at multiple levels in hearts including cardiac contractile functions and structures, myosin chain gene expressions, oxidative stress, and apoptosis and related signaling activities," wrote the researchers, led by Wei-Wen Kuo from the China Medical University in Taiwan.

"In conclusion, garlic oil possesses significant potential for protecting hearts from diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy," the study authors said in a statement.

Turmeric and its anti cancer properties
CHEMOPREVENTIVE EFFECT OF
CURCUMIN IN COLORECTAL CANCER

INTRODUCTION
Colorectal cancer is main cause of cancer deaths in western countries. It accounts about to 15% of all cancers. Aetiology of colon cancer is multi-factorial and complex but diet is one of the important factors to cause and prevent cancers, like high animal fat consumption is associated with an increase in rate of colon cancer and frequent consumption of vegetables and fruits, due to presence of bioactive food components, decreases the risk of human cancers. This observation has led to research focused upon chemopreventive agents, especially those obtained from the diet. Recently researches have been focused on identifying, dietary phytochemicals that have the ability to inhibit the formation of cancer. Researches have shown that extracts of plants or their ingredients possess inhibitory effects against chemically induced carcinogenesis. Although, nutritional intervention may not be sufficient to protect/or reduce risk of colon cancer in high risk individuals. A complementary approach for secondary prevention would be to recognise and distinguish between chemopreventive agents. The effectiveness of these various chemopreventive agents, together with nutritional interventions in high-risk individuals should then be assessed. Medicinal plants or their crude extracts have been traditionally used in the prevention and/or treatment of several chronic diseases by various different ethnic cultures world wide. In India the incidence rate of large and small bowel cancers are low, but rectal cancer is more common in India as compared to colon cancer. This low incidence of colon cancer in Indians can be due to high intake of starch and the presence of natural antioxidants such as curcumin, found in spice turmeric which is exclusively used in Indian cooking.

Diferuloylmethane, a yellow pigment more commonly known as curcumin, is one of the active phytochemical found in plants of species of Zingiberaceae. Plants like ginger, saffron and turmeric are some of the plants that have plenty of curcumin. In the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, turmeric has traditionally been used as a treatment for inflammation, skin wounds, and tumours. Turmeric is a significant ingredient in most commercial curry powders. It is also used to give a yellow colour to some prepared mustards, canned chicken broth, and other foods, and is also used as a fabric dye.

HISTORY OF CURCUMIN
Turmeric is known as the poor man's saffron, it is an ancient spice whose use dates back to the time of the Egyptian pharaohs. Highly prized by both Muslims and Indo-Europeans for its medicinal uses, it is just coming into its own as a powerful natural medicine in the West where research is beginning to confirm the potent roles it plays as an anti-inflammatory, anticancer, anti-mutagenic and antioxidant remedy. A traditional remedy in Ayurvedic medicine, an ancient Indian healing system that dates back over 5,000 years, it has been used through the ages as an "herbal aspirin" and "herbal cortisone" to relieve discomfort and inflammation associated with an extraordinary spectrum of infectious and autoimmune diseases. Indian Materia Medica, a standard Ayurvedic reference, cites dozens of conditions in which turmeric can be helpful as an adjunctive therapy including tissue injury or irritation, microbial infections, fevers, allergies, sinusitis, gastritis, colitis, hepatitis, kidney disease arthritis dermatitis, phlebitis, tuberculosis and autoimmune disorders. It is also cited as a remedy for liver disorders accompanied by jaundice. Topically, it can be used as a poultice to reduce inflammation and swelling due to sprains, cuts, bruises and superficial infections, including those of the eye -- which are treated with an eyewash containing turmeric that cools and soothes burning eyes. Another traditional use is to relieve congestion -- inhaling the fumes of burning turmeric directly into the nostrils is said to cause copious mucous discharge. Turmeric also is given to relieve diarrhoea and fevers, as well as vertigo, when applied directly to the scalp. Used for skin infections, colic, menstrual problems and congestion in China and Cambodia, the tuber also is used as a tonic, stimulant and diuretic in Madagascar. In Chinese traditional medicine it is known as "Jiang Huang," and used to eliminate flatulence; resolve liver and urinary problems, menstrual disorders, haemorrhage, and fever and chest pain; and prepared as a poultice for sores, wounds, bruises and infections. “There is also a vegetable which has all the properties of the true saffron, as well as the colour, and yet it is not really saffron” - Marco Polo, Thirteenth Century.

TIMELINE
Although the chemical structure of this remarkable spice, food preservative and dye was identified in 1910 it was only in the 1970s and 1980s that its many, varied health-promoting properties were identified. Recent, research is confirming what traditional healers have known all along, that the fresh juice of the root reduces swelling in bruises, wounds and insect bites and the dried powder kills parasites, relieves head colds and arthritic aches and pains. Research is also beginning to show that turmeric may be a valuable anticancer agent.

The earliest scientific paper on curcumin was published in year 1976 Sharma O P proposed the antioxidant activity of curcumin and related compounds. Gupta B et al, (1980) published Mechanism of Curcumin induced gastric ulcer in rats. Role of curcumin as an anti-inflammatory was demonstrated by Rao T S et al in 1982 and Mukhopadhyay A et al in 1982. In early 1983 a paper by Jiang T L et al, demonstrated effects of curcumae species on human tumour stem cell assay, however curcumae were relatively ineffective on the human tumours tested by him. However two years later in 1985 Kuttan R et al, saw inhibition in ovary cells of Chinese Hamsters by curcumin. A new model for evaluating nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was described by Satoskar R R et al in 1986. In the end of year 1989 researchers from Amala Cancer Research Centre, India demonstrated inhibition of chemical carcinogenesis by curcumin. There was no looking back after this year, a decade of research work on curcumin and turmeric suggested it as a potent anti-cancer and chemo preventive phytochemical. Recent studies are also suggesting curcumin as potent herbal remedy to fight against breast, colon, hepatic, skin and other cancers of gastric tract. Newer studies have suggested that curcumin inhibits HIV replication by blocking the long-terminal repeat region on HIV's genes.

CONCLUSION
Mechanism of curcumin is poorly known and many varied theories have been suggested about its action. But from these studies we can infer that curcumin inhibits carcinogenesis in large bowels.

Diet for a healthy pregnancy
Diet for a healthy pregnancy
For a mum-to-be, it is even more important to have a well balanced diet, as what you eat has to meet the needs of the mother as well as the developing baby in the womb. In the first trimester most of the physical and mental growth of the baby takes place, one should be very careful in terms of health and diet. During these 1st three months, important organs and the nervous system are developed, hence it is essential to eat a balanced diet from the beginning. The baby takes up room in the abdomen leaving less space for the stomach and thus making it harder for one to eat also leading to morning sickness, yet one need to eat nutritious diet to ensure proper growth and development of the baby.

A nutritious diet includes adequate amount of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins, selected from five basic groups – fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grain products, proteins (meat, fish, pulses, and lentils), milk and other dairy products. Eat a variety of food as possible but in moderation, as too much of any food can cause excessive weight gain. Try and eat 3 big meals and 3 small meals throughout the day.

Some essential nutrients to be considered while planning the diet:

Folic acid: it is one of the key ingredients required for the development of the nervous system. Deficiency of folic acid in first few weeks would cause neural tube defect and other birth defects like cleft lip and congenital heart disease. At least 4 mg of folic acid should be consumed from the day of conception and during the first trimester. Natural sources of folic acid – dark green leafy vegetables, liver, yeast, beans, citrus fruits and now also available in fortified bread and cereals. As folic acid is easily destroyed while cooking, best is to either steam the vegetables or eat them raw. Folic acid supplements can be taken under your physician’s supervision.

Iron: iron aids the production of hemoglobin. As the blood volume increases during pregnancy, hemoglobin levels should also increase, for which the iron requirement also increases. An average woman needs about 15 mg of iron daily and during pregnancy the requirement doubles up to 30-50 mg per day. Include food rich in iron like – potatoes, raisins, dates, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, whole grain breads, meat and iron fortified cereals. Iron derived from food is not enough to combat the need hence iron supplements should be consumed under the guidance of your physician. Iron is best absorbed when taken along with vitamin C, hence the supplements should be consumed with an orange or sweet lime juice. Also certain medications, calcium rich food, caffeinated drinks and antacids inhibits absorption of iron so should be avoided with iron supplements.

Calcium: it is essential for the development of bones and teeth of the baby. It starts forming about the eight week of pregnancy. One needs about double (1200 mg) the quantity of calcium than normal. One needs to consume at least 3 servings of milk and milk products. Apart from dairy products foods high in calcium are – green leafy vegetables, salmon, tofu, broccoli, peas, okra, beans, brussel sprouts, sesame seeds, bok choy, almonds.

Proteins: Protein is most important nutrient required for the proper development of the baby. Eat variety of protein rich foods to ensure adequate protein intake. Incorporate vitamin B6 along for proper utilization of protein. Sources – nuts, peas, lentils, beans, dairy products, egg white, fish and meat. Animal sources are also high in fat, so choose lean cuts of meat and limit your intake.

Vitamin A: essential for the embryonic growth of the baby, for the development of heart, lungs, kidneys, eyes and bones, the circulatory, respiratory and the central nervous system. Vitamin A is also essential during the third trimester as after the birth of the baby, it helps mother with the postpartum repair. But Vitamin A intake should not exceed the recommended dosage (750mg /2500 IU). Over dose of vitamin A can cause birth defects and liver toxicity.

Vitamin C: it helps in development of a strong placenta, improves your immunity thus prevents infections, it also enhances iron absorption. As vitamin C is not restored in our body, a daily supply is essential. A considerable amount of vitamin is lost in prolonged storage and while cooking, hence it is best to eat fresh food and steam the vegetables or eat them raw. Sources – fresh fruits like – strawberries, raspberries, kiwi, grapefruit, passion fruit, orange, sweet lime etc, fresh vegetables – green leafy vegetables, beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, tomatoes etc.

Fiber: constipation and piles are most common conditions during pregnancy; high fiber diet should be consumed to prevent it. Sources- fresh fruits and vegetable, brown rice, beans, nuts, cereals and pulses are very good sources of fiber.

Water: pregnant women should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. It plays important role during pregnancy – carries nutrients from mother’s food to the baby, it prevents constipation, piles, UTI and during last trimester drinking enough water prevents from dehydration and thus prevents contractions and premature labor. Juices can replace for fluids but they are high in calories and one can gain extra weight. Tea, coffee and aerated drinks cannot be included in total amount of fluids as they contain caffeine which reduces the amount of fluid in our body.

Certain foods are no no during pregnancy:-

Canned and processed food
Spicy food
Tea, coffee, aerated drinks. Caffeine is linked to low birth weight, it is also one of the cause for miscarriage.
Hot chocolate, sugary foods like cakes, candies, sodas, colas.
Reduce salt intake, especially when you have swelling and high blood pressure during pregnancy. Do not completely avoid salt as it is an important nutrient.
Shark, swordfish, marlin, they may have high levels of mercury.
Raw sea food such as oyster and sushi.
Raw or undercooked meat, poultry and eggs, they may contain bacteria which can harm your baby.
Certain cheese like brie and camembert and blue veined cheese like stilton, they all contain listeria, a bacteria that can harm your unborn child.
Liver and liver products as they are high in retinol a form of Vitamin A, too much of this vitamin is not good for the development of the baby.
Junk, fatty and sugary food.
Do not eat left over, frozen and deep frozen food.
Avoid alcohol and tobacco during pregnancy. It is known to cause physical defects and learning disabilities and emotional disturbances in children. If you have to drink, u can have no more than one or two units of alcohol and not more than twice a week. DON’T GET DRUNK.
Do not go on diet during pregnancy can harm you and the developing baby. Remember weight gain during pregnancy is a very positive sign for a healthy pregnancy.

Treat yourself occasionally

If you are pregnant does not mean that you have to give up all your favorite food. Once in a while you can enjoy the luxury of an ice cream or desserts, but it should not be the mainstay of your diet. But when you occasionally indulge, don’t feel guilty. ENJOY EVERY BITE!
