LEUCODERMA / VITILIGO AND HOMEOPATHY
FACTS

Leucoderma, the word literally means white skin. There is a pigment called melanin which gives our skin a uniform colour. Gradual loss of this pigment from the skin layer results in white patches.

Vitiligo usually starts with a small white spot(s) which gradually enlarges and develop into patch(es). These patches are pale in the beginning, but become whiter and whiter as time passes by due to loss of pigment. As the patches enlarge they merge together and form a very broad patch. In some cases most of the skin of the body may be covered by with white patches.

The course of vitiligo varies. With some it reaches a certain degree of development and then remains stationary for years; and in others it progresses indefinitely.

Cause of vitiligo is not yet clear but excessive mental tension seems to play a vital role. Injuries and burns do cause localized vitiligo. Heredity is also a well-recognized causative factor.

THE HOMEOPATHY APPROACH

The outward presentation of the internal imbalance is in the form of white patches on the skin. The constitutional homeopathic treatment is targeted to set this imbalance to normalcy, thereby producing normal skin and good health. That is why local application of any type is not advised and only oral homeopathic medication is used.

The aim of the constitutional treatment in homeopathy is to treat the patient as a whole so as to stimulate the body-mind system from within. The constitutional homeopathic treatment helps the body's own natural healing powers hence leading to a long lasting cure.

The duration of treatment can not be predicted as vitiligo is a chronic skin condition mostly resistant to treatment. The total duration of treatment varies from patient to patient, depending on various diverse factors such as:

(a) The duration of patches

(b) The extent, location and speed of spread of the patches

(c) Presence of other diseases.

(d) The overall general health of the patient.

Generally, the treatment is long term. And desire for faster results frustrates the patient more than anything else and patient lands up with just change of Doctor. One should start the treatment with a positive attitude and must not rely on HIS EYES ONLY. Close photograph(s) of the involved area before starting the treatment and repeat photograph(s) every 3 months should be the ideal approach for assessment of changes. One may expect a definite change in about three to five months, depending on the duration, extent and speed of the spread of the vitiligo patches. The total duration of constitutional homeopathic treatment may be anything between six months to two years or even more.

The advantage of homeopathic treatment over other treatments e.g. steroids, puva etc are that
1. Homeopathy offers long-lasting cure instead of temporary relief.
2. It is absolutely harmless, safe and devoid of any toxicity.
3. There is no need for any local applications or sitting under sun or artificial light.

Overall health improvement is an added benefit.

Cosmic Healing and Beauty
It has now become a trend that we blindly take cosmetic products for every kind of skin problem we have. There are a lot of people having pimples on their faces, some have dark spots, wrinkles and a lot other such problems. The problems overshadow our beauty and apperence and hence we start spending enormous money on various kinds of cosmetics and surgeries available in the market.

We always forget that our body is not designed for such harsh treatments and hence we damage our skin in a terrible mannar. A polished advertisement with an actor or actress makes us believe on the product and we without even cosidering the ingredents involved, start using those products.

But the question that arises is from where exactly these problems arises? To know the root cause of the problem, we need to look inside ourself as what we are watching on our face or body is just a mini reflection of what is happening inside the body. It all appens due to hormonal imbalance and disturbed metabolism. I know these are very impressing terms but to simply the problem, it all starts with our lifestyle. The way we sleep, the way we eat, the way we breathe are all interconnected and together form the symptoms of positive or negative lifecycle.

The damage we do to our body is due to our indisciplined lifestyle and it is what reduces our skin radiance. I understand that it is very difficult to change our lifestye but atleast in return of so much work that our body does for ourself, we need to provide it with something better than sleep.

Believe me, an hours meditation will give more energy than an 8 hour sleep. You need to meditate, if not an hour than atleast 10 mins on a daily routine and just stop taking your lunch. It does not mean you need to stay hungry. Eat a plate full of fruits and vegetables and watch the difference.

If you gift your body just two of these things, then you need not to spend a single penny on 'Loose your weight shops' or 'Skin clinics' or any beauty creams or facials or whatever.

You can save a lot of your money which you spend unnecessarily and all you need to do is a the above mentioned exercises with discipline. Start doing them once and slowly you will become habitual. Allow your body to show its magic.
ITS ALL IN YOU. . . . . .

Common questions on pimples by Skin specialist Dr. Rajan T.D. MD,DVD,DNB.
Q. My parents say that they never took treatment for pimples. As a specialist what is your opinion about youngsters seeking treatment for this complaint?

In the past decade several new chemicals have been introduced for treating pimples which were not available when your parents were young. Also, some of the currently available agents help to remove blackheads and thereby minimise the chances of large pimples. In this manner we can minimise marks and scars. Although acne or pimples are a problem related to age, it is better that treatment is promptly taken to prevent ugly-looking scars which are difficult to clear.

Q.Why is squeezing of pimples harmful?
Imagine squeezing a pipe - the contents will move in both the directions! There is no doubt that when the pimple is squeezed it expels some amount of pus. At the same time it causes aggravation of the inflammation in the deeper part of the skin. Also, if the nails are not kept clean it could add to the bacterial contamination of the oil glands in the skin. Therefore, it is not advisable to fiddle with the pimples.

Q. I am an 18-year old girl suffering from severe pimples. I have stopped consuming fried and oily foods for the past 6 months, yet my face is not showing any improvement. Please advise.
Although it was believed in the past that the diet is srongly related to the occurrence of acne the current finding do not give much weightage to diet alone. Pimples are caused by several factors interacting with each other. Of these, diet is only a minor factor and hence you are not advised to stop intake of oily foodstuffs completely.
It is also important to remember that boys and girls suffering from severe form of pimples need to take proper oral medicines as well as creams to get good recovery. Simply depriving oneself of the good things of life does not solve the problem!

Q. I have extremely oily skin over my face and I occasionally get pimples. Which cream or cosmetic should I use to make my skin dry?
You are fortunate not to have too many pimples despite having an oily skin. The amount of oil produced by one's skin cannot be altered by external applications. Wash your face with soap and water at least three to four times a day to remove excess oil. Consult a specialist if your pimples are persistent or if they produce lot of discomfort so that an appropriate medicine can be prescribed.

Q. My face is quite oily but I had a very clear complexion till I underwent a facial 4 months ago. Since then I keep getting large clusters of pimples which cause lot of pain. Could there be a connection between the two?
Pimples develop through two main mechanisms: excess oil (sebum) production in the skin and blockage of the pores (sebaceous ducts) which carry the oil outwards. It is possible that when you underwent facial, the preparation used was massaged deeply into the skin. This may have clogged the already narrowed pores resulting in pimples. You should avoid massaging any oily preparation into your skin or it could further aggravate the condition.

Q. I have several red eruptions and tiny blackheads on my cheeks since few months. How long does the treatment take to clear my face?
By and large an 8-week course of medications help to clear the pimples and blackheads. This does not mean that they clear permanently. After the course of treatment the pimples and blackheads reduce by about 80% and the fresh eruptions can be promptly treated with mild local agents which prevent scarring.

Scars produced in the past will take several months to clear with local gels. Even if no treatment is taken, the scars fade gradually.

CASE OF INFANTILE ECZEMA
This is the case of Baby. P.K (Patient Ref. No. PS-403), a 4YEARS old female child who was brought to the clinic by anxious parents with complains of infantile eczema since the age of 2 months. She would develop reddish eruptions over the body and these would be more severe on the cheeks. She would get severe itching and would become very irritable on account of the same. Her complaints would get worse during the winter season and at night time.

Along with these she also had history of recurrent colds since childhood. She would develop cold and cough every 2-3 weeks.

She had marked desire for sweets, cold-drinks, ice-creams, chocolate and fruits. She would sweat lesser than normal. She was comfortable in the cold climate usually. She was a chubby child by constitution.

The peculiar mental traits were that she was an obstinate child with marked fear of darkness and of loud noise. She loved music, dancing and going out. She did not like to be caressed but otherwise was of a very mixing and playful nature. Never sit one place for long time. She has excessive crying when her demand is not full filled. Lying on abdomen. She is child of working parents. Mother rejoins her job at the 2 months age of pt. she leave her in crab. This is the time when complaint was started.

He consult pediatricians, dermatologist without improvement. Grand father having allergic Asthma & Eczema, Grand Mother having hypertension.

O/H/O : LSCS, Birth wt was 3.2kg
Mental state of mother during pregnancy: Tension about work level & family
Nausea & vomiting for 3 ½ months

Mile Stone: Teeth at the age of 6 months 13 days

Based on these features she was prescribed homoeopathic medicine named Medorrhinum. Within few days itching was gone, her tendency to develop these eczematous lesions was markedly better. She would get these lesions only occasionally and they would not even require treatment at times. Frequent attacks of cold and cough also under control. Mother left job for 4 -5 months to take care of baby.

This case shows that eczema (and similar allergic disorders) can be effectively controlled with homoeopathic medicines without the use of external applications of any kind. It cures the eczema from within and restores the deviated immunity of the individual back to normalcy.

case of psoriasis treated with homoeo
Mrs. G.S (pt Ref. No. PS – 303) a 36 years old female came with his husband with prescription paper of dermatologist to my clinic. She was suffering from the psoriasis since 6 years. Now she was fed up with Allopathic treatment. The complaints had increased since 1 month. She had extensive scaling lesions started from the ear to elbow to leg – up to thigh. There was intense itching which would be worse during winters and during the night time. She had taken allopathic as well as Homoeopathic treatment in the past for a long time but did not benefit much from these.

The patient was of an average built with an average appetite. she liked Spicy, Sour test. She would sweat profusely especially on the face with offensive odor & stain. Sleep was sound with lots of dreams of Accident, Frightful, Death of Family members, Snakes etc. that were mostly unremembered.

Patient is coming from the middle class nuclear family. She had good relation with every one in childhood. She was average in study but likes to participate in programmed. She likes knitting. She did marriage with Mr. at the age of 22 years without interest but she could not share her choice in front of parents. There was big family of husband. FIL, MIL, two younger brothers, SIL. She had strain relation with her MIL who is irritable & dominating by nature. She felt insecurity in this environment. She had fear of MIL, never express any things in front of her. She had constant fear of quarrel. This leads to sleeplessness, thoughts which were better after weeping alone. Patient is elder in family so all responsibility is on her shoulder. She has anxiety about house since 2000. Anxiety about children future. She had constant thought in mind that how many days we will take care of BIL because they are not working. She has fear of dark, alone. Can not see the pain of others. The patient had a friendly nature but he had become withdrawn off late. She would like to have the company of her friends but since few months she had begun to feel uncomfortable in the company of others due to his skin problems. She felt more when her sister’s husband dies in accident. She would not express her feelings and would not share her grief with anyone. She had the tendency to suppress her grief and would divert his mind to something else. She would frequently brood about her problems. She was very fastidious by nature and was very particular about the way she would keep his things. She likes winter rather than summer. Headache from sun heat.

No any past history, Father having kidney stone. Based on the above history the patient was prescribed a remedy called Mag. Mur as constitutional medicine & Psorinum is inter current medicine. Within 2 months of treatment his complaints were better by more than 90%. There was no itching anymore. Overall she did very well with the treatment and that too within such a short span of time.

This case illustrates that even obstinate conditions like Psoriasis can also be effectively tackled with Homoeopathy.

Remark: The remedy prescribed in these cases is patient-specific i.e. it has been prescribed based on the symptoms specific to the patient at that point of time. It is advisable that the patient does not indulge in any self-medication.

Psoriasis and Its Ayurveda Management
Psoriasis
What is Psoriasis ?
Psoriasis is an inflammatory disorder that affects the skin and nails. It is marked by patches of thick, red skin covered with silvery scales that occur primarily on the elbows, knees, lower back and scalp. Although not life-threatening, it can be painful and cause psychological and emotional distress.

Psoriasis develops when the ordinary life cycle of skin cells accelerates. Normally, skin usually die and flake off in weeks but in people with Psoriasis this process happens within days.

This is a chronic condition, where there are periods when it becomes really bad alternating with times when in imporves or goes into remission.

What causes Psoriasis ?
Some people's genes have a tendency towards acquiring psoriasis which could be triggered off by injury, throat infection, certain drugs and physical or emotional stress. Although the exact causes are not known, it is widely understood to be a genetic immune disorder.

Is it contagious ?
No! Psoriasis is never spread from person to person. It does not even spread from one part of the body to another. It is a peculiar condition where some parts of the skin gets affected.

Is it serious ?
Although Psoriasis is a chronic, stubborn condition of the skin, it is rarely serious. However, the sore, dry, scaly skin can give it the appearance of a serious disease. It has been reported that around 10% of those affected by Psoriasis also get affected by a condition called Psoriatic Arthritis. This is an affliction of the joints particularly of fingers and toes occassionally in the lumbar joints causing a low backache. Like Psoriasis this form of arthritis can also wax and wane.

What makes psoriasis worse ?
Some things that can make Psoriasis worse are stress and infections. Some medicines can also make it worse. These medicines include lithium and certain high blood pressure medicines, such as beta-blockers abd angiotensin-converting enazyme (ACE) inhibitors, as well as pain relievers like some non-sterodial anti=inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as Ibuprofen. Consult your dermatologist for more details.

Is there a cure for psoriasis ?
Unfortunately, there is no known complete cure for psoriasis. however, there are various treatments available which provides relief from symptoms for varying periods of time.

What are the available treatments for Psoriasis ?
Keeping the skin moisturised is a good first step. Prescription creams, oils, ointments and lotions (called topical medicines) that one can apply on the affected areas are often used. In some countries there are shampoos available for scalp psoriasis. In india ayurvedic oils are used.

In more severe cases, oral medication such as Methotrexate, 6-Thioguanine, are taken in pill form. Sometimes, when it gets extremely serious immunosuppressant drugs may needs to be given.

Other treatments include special type of ultraviolet light therapy. Sunlight can also help psoriasis. one shoulf use a sunscreen on the parts of your skin that aren't affected by psoriasis. It's especially important to put sunscreen on the face.

Doctors usually prescribe a combination of the above available treatments depending upon the type and severity of the problem. Whatever the treatment prescribed, it is important to regularly use the medications for as long as the doctor advises.

What can one do to imporove one's condition ?
The severity of psoriasis may be the subject to and influenced by several factors which can be under your control. Here is a partial lidt of lifestyle and/or dietary changes to consider :

Make sure that a 'dermatologist' or a skin specialist jas made the diagnosis that indeed you have psoriasis.

Reduce stress level.

Whenever possible, expose the Psoriasis affected areas to fresh air and mild sunlight.

Do not consume alcohol, or consume very small amounts.

Do not smoke.

Do not eat spicy, hot or acidic foods.

Rinse the affected skin only in lukewatrm water, sea water or baking soda bath.

Do not use synthetic or aggressive soaps which contain harsh ingredients or detergents. Use body wash or soaps with a cucumber, Glycerin or Aloe Vera base. You can also use these soaps to wash your scalp.

If you use topical products to control you psoriasis, it is recommended to keep your skin somewhat moist after you have taken you shover or bath.

Use medicated oil for your scalp.

If you are living close to ocean, try to take regular sea baths, leave your skin somewhat wet and let the salt crystals dry on your skin. Avoid bathing in polluted seas.

Regular daily doses of sunlight taken in short exposures are recommended. Avoid a sunburn which may make psoriasis worse.

Consider buying a tanning, or sun bathing lamp. Get the type which excludes or filters the damaging UV rays. Be careful not to overdo it and burn yourself.

Remember psoriasis cannot be cured, however, it can be asserted by regularly using your medications.

Some medications or treatments may have an adverse affects. Remember to discuss your condition with your doctor regularly.

Discuss the suggestions above with your doctor before you try them. make sure they will not conflict with your current prescription medications.

How does Psoriasis affect life ?
All types of psoriasis, ranging from mild to severe, can affect a person's quality of life. Living with this lifelong condition can be physically and emotionally challenging.

Itching, soreness, and cracked and bleeding skin are common. Nail psiriasis can be painful. Even the simple act of squeezing a tube of toothpaste can hurt.

Several studies have shown tha people often feel frustrated. In some cases, psoriasis limits activities and makes it difficult to perform job responsibilities. A survey conducted by the National Psoriasis Foundation in 2002 indicates that 26% of people living with moderate to severe psoriasis have been forced to change or discontinue their normal daily activities.

Studies also have shown that stress, anxiety, loneliness, and low se;f-esteem are part of daily life for people living with psoriasis. Embarrassment is another common feeling. What if one extended one's hand to someone and the person recoiled ? How would one feel if one spent most of one's life trying to hide one's skin?

How does one cope with Psoriasis ?
The first thing that one needs to do is 'accept' that one has this skin condition and that it will most probably stay for a long, long time. Acceptance is the first step. Just as a person with diabetes learns to accept that it is a life-long disease so must one with psoriasis accept his or her condition.

Shame, fear and embarrassment happen becuase of lack of proper information. If one gathers as much information as possible from the doctor, books, and the internet, one realises that it is a common condition that affects millions of people globally.

Do not avoid going to parties, family and religious functions. Socialising is a habit that one needs to cultivate. Isolation can lead to bouts of depression and frustration and further aggravate one's condition. Being happy and socially connected does wonders to one's overall outlook towards life.

Talking about it to one's friends and colleagues also helps in becoming confortable with it. Wherever possible, try not to hide it. It will be surprising to learn that most people understand and that they still like you.

Find a hair dresser/salon who understands the problem and has a special method of serving you. Most importantly talk to others suffering from psoriasis. It gives great relief and comfort. One can also exchange ideas, tips, and techniques to better one's condition.

Leucoderma(Vitiligo) and Its Ayurveda Management
Leucoderma (White Patches,Vitiligo)

Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder in the human skin. The human skin contains special skin cells (melanocytes) that produce the pigment melanin which colors the skin. In Vitiligo, the special skin cells (melanocytes) as well as the tissues (mucous membranes) that line the inside of the mouth, nose, genital and rectal areas, and the retina of the eyes are destroyed. As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair may also turn white that grows in areas affected by vitiligo.

What causes vitiligo?
There are several theories regarding the cause of vitiligo (see the cause) but the actual cause is not fully known. According to one theory, people with vitiligo develop antibodies that, turn upon them and destroy their own melanocytes instead of protecting them. There is another theory according to which the melanocytes somehow attack and destroy themselves. Finally, some people with vitligo have reported that a single event such as severe sunburn or an episode of emotional distress is the main cause of this order. Scientifically, events of this nature have not been accepted as the main cause of vitiligo. These are merely coincidences.

Who is affected by vitiligo? The number of people affected by vitiligo disorder ranges from 40-50 million. It forms about 1 to 2% of people in the world. 2 to 5 million people have the disorder in the United States alone.
Vitiligo affects all races and both sexes equally and ninety-five percent of its victims are below the age of 40.

What is the association of vitiligo with autoimmune disease?
In Autoimmune diseases, a person's immune system reacts against the body's own organs or tissues. Vitiligo is found to be more common in people with certain autoimmune diseases.
Autoimmune diseases that are associated with vitiligo include: hyperthyroidism (over activity of the thyroid gland), adrenocortical insufficiency (the adrenal gland does not produce enough of the hormone corticosteroid), alopecia areata (patches of baldness), and pernicious anemia (a low level of red blood cells caused by the failure of the body to absorb vitamin B12).

Is vitiligo inherited?
Vitiligo may be hereditary in some cases. Children of vitiligo affected parents are more likely to develop vitiligo disorder. However, most children will not get vitilgo even if a parent has it. Also most people with vitiligo do not have a family history of the disorder. Large number of inherited disorders are associated with vitiligo. They include: albinism of the ocular type, autoimmune polyendocrinopathy syndrome, congenital deafness with vitilego and achalasia, dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria, ermine phenotype, familial histiocyctic reticulosis, kabuki syndrome, and the syndrome of spastic paraparesis, vitiligo, premature graying and characteristic facies.

What are the symptoms of vitiligo?
White patches (depigmentation) on the skin are the foremost symbol of vitiligo. These patches are more common in sun-exposed areas, including the hands, feet, arms, face, and lips. Other common areas are the armpits and groin, and around the mouth, eyes, nostrils, navel, and genitals. Vitiligo generally appears in one of three patterns: focal pattern, segmental pattern and generalized pattern. In focal pattern, the depigmentation is limited to one or only a few areas. In segmental pattern, depigmented patches are developed on only one side of the body. But in the generalized pattern, depigmentation occurs on different parts of the body.

In Ayurveda, Leucoderma is known as 'shivitr' or kilaas' - Appearance of patches on skin with white or red coloration without any kind of swelling, fermentation...

Leucoderma is a skin disease also known as white patch (the development of circumscribed depigmentred patches). There is complete loss of melancytes from the affected patch. There may be positive family history of the disorder in those generalized leucoderma and this type is associated with auto-immune diseases such as diabetes and thyroid.

'Leuco' means 'white' and 'derma' means 'skin', thus leucoderma means abnormal whiteness of the skin. This disease is usually very difficult to treat. If the patient and the physician treat this disease for a long time with patience, it is possible to cure it. During the treatment very small blackish spots appear in the white patches. These spots keep spreading and the skin gradually becomes normal. The abnormal whiteness disappears. In this way, the disease is cured. It is not an infectious disease. Only the skin becomes white.

In terms of Ayurveda:

According to Ayurveda this disease is known as 'shivitr' or 'kilaas' - the appearance of a patche on skin with white or red coloration without any kind of swelling, fermentation, and pus formation in it. The patch of de-pigmentation of the skin is generally surrounded with normal skin. The patch might spread extensively covering the entire skin surface.Pitta is the dosha, which is responsible for occurrence of this disease. When it is increased beyond the norm it affects rakt dhatu (blood ), maas dhatu (flesh), maid dhatu (fat).

Causes of Leucoderma(Vitiligo)

Why do white patches appear? So far it has not been possible to find out what causes this problem. However, there are certain things which affect the human body and can cause white patches in the skin, which spread rapidly.

(1) When the quantity of melanin in the blood is reduced, the skin becomes white,
(2) chronic constipation,
(3) malfunctioning of the liver, jaundice,
(4) ailments of the stomach, (5) worms,
(6) diseases like typhoid which affect the stomach and intestines,
(7) chronic diarrhoea,
(8) irregular food habits, indigestion,
(9) insufficient sweating,
(10) heredity,
(11) excessive mental tension or worries,
(12) syphilis,
(13) tubercular constitution,
(14) hurt, burn,
(15) wearing clothes tight at the waist,
(16) problems of the ear, teeth and throat,
(17) meat-eating.
