Vedic System of Healthy Living
Studies conform the ancient health techniques described in Indian medical literatures. Vedic lifestyle can be a potent preventive measure. The Indian system of detoxification and healing for senses-mind-spirit is yoga and for body is Ayurveda.
VEDANTA AYURVEDA developed a unique training cum therapeutic regimen based on Ayurveda and yoga philosophy of Integral health care systems, some interesting findings in study on yoga.
The Indian system of detoxification and healing for senses-mind-spirit is yoga and for body is Ayurveda, actually these two systems/branches of Indian system of medicine are interwoven in each other that it’s very much impossible to separate them, as we find in Charaka Samhita the healing concepts sequence goes to reversing the disease process-restoration of health-maintain –up gradation up to the level of Samaprakriti (natural genetic transformation to the optimum level of genetic health) - immortal state (naishthiki chikitsa). Before doing the yoga a healthy state is pre-requisite expect in therapeutic yoga.

Integral health care concept through Ayurveda and yoga is one of the greatest Indian contributions to the world and has got vast potential in all fields and to develop harmony in between body, senses, mind and soul.

Yoga is helpful in transforming the criminal mentality to calmness as came in light from the study conducted in Tihar jail, Delhi (India). It is a multi billion-dollar business in the United States. In many universities, it is accepted as subject and included in syllabi. In latest famous book Inspire! What great leaders do written by Lance Secretan published by John Wiley and sons, the benefit of meditation is elaborately described for good corporate governance.

By practicing transcendental meditation, many people have got relief from back pain, neck pain, and depression. The mind calms, what thoughts you have during meditation become clearer, more focused. Anger, anxiety and worries give way to peace. If not able to pay for high medical expenses, one can definitely take help of meditation.

Food habits should be to keep in mind and body in pace. One can get more than enough proteins and other essential nutrients by eating a balanced vegetarian diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, dairy products, nuts and seeds. A vegetarian diet is adequate, as long as you eat enough protein-rich whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. In any case, your body will tell you what you need to eat. If you have a particular craving for any type of food, it means that you need the nutrients that it supplies – so trust the natural signals your body gives you.

Medical studies continue to show regular meditation working magic in reducing blood pressure and stress-related illnesses, including heart disease. Brain images show that regular meditation helps calm the most active sensory-assaulted parts of the brain.

The ancient Hindu sage Patanjali, who had mastered the secrets of the human mind, wrote a book Yogasutra indicates that for complete transformation towards higher race is possible for existing human. It has both cosmic relevance and cosmic resonance. In spite of its universal appeal, for most people total control of mind remains an elusive goal and daunting task. From time immemorial, there have been many attempts throughout the world to unlock the mysteries of the mind and to achieve total control over it through a variety of techniques. One of the most powerful of these techniques is meditation. Many spiritual leaders, sages, saints, and holy people such as Sri Buddha, Sri Ramakrishna, Madam Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda have practiced this.

Trans fat free food does not mean its safe
Trans fat free food does not mean its safe

Dr KK Aggarwal

After the CEC report release in India most urban Indian have heard of trans fats but are still ignorant about which foods to avoid.
As per findings in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, in the US also 92% people are aware what trans fats are and three-quarters know that the fats may raise the risk of heart disease. Yet, when asked to name three food sources of trans fats, only 21 percent could do so. In India the figures are much less.
Health campaigns and media stories have boosted consumers' trans fat knowledge, but there is still more to be done.
Trans fats are notorious because they not only raise "bad" LDL cholesterol -- like the saturated fats in meat and butter do -- but also lower levels of heart-healthy HDL cholesterol.

1. Trans fats are formed during food processing when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil to make it solidify.
2. Foods that list so-called partially hydrogenated vegetable oil on the label contain trans fat.
3. Traditionally, it includes most commercially prepared baked and fried foods -- including cookies, crackers, chips, breads and french fries.
4. Caution: most manufacturers and restaurants have been increasingly removing trans fats from their products. Eve those labeled "trans-fat-free", products may still contain significant amounts of saturated fat. Some manufacturers are using tropical oils -- coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil -- to replace trans fats, and those oils are high in saturated fat.

YOGA AND DIET IN DIABETES
THE IMPORTANCE OF YOGA AND DIET MANAGMENT IN DIABETES CARE---

HOW IMPORTANT IS EXCERCISE?

Exercise plays an important role in controlling diabetes because it lowers blood sugar and helps insulin to work more efficiently in the body. Exercise also enhances cardiovascular fitness by improving blood flow and increasing the heart's pumping power. It also promotes weight loss and lowers blood pressure. Exercise only has value, however, when it is done regularly—at least three to four sessions per week for 30 to 60 minutes per session. People with type 2 diabetes who exercise regularly have been shown to lose weight and gain better control over their blood pressure, thereby reducing their risk for cardiovascular disease (a major complication of diabetes). Studies have also shown that people with type 1 diabetes who regularly exercise reduce their need for insulin injections

YOGA--WHICH YOGA IS BENIFICIAL?

Pranayama –
There are 8 types of Pranayama mentioned in Hatha Yoga. One of the basic preparations for Pranayama is Nadi Shodhan Pranayama or alternate nostril breathing, this type is found useful in diabetes as Alternate nostril breathing has calming effect on nervous system, which reduces stress levels, helping in diabetes treatment. Also research has shown that Bhramari and Bhasrika Pranayama help in diabetes. Bharamari has calming effect on mind, brain and nervous system. Bhasrika Pranayama is revitalizing Pranayama, which increases oxygen levels and reduces carbon dioxide levels in the blood. In bhasrika Pranayama, the abdominal muscles and diaphragm are used which puts pressure on the internal organs. But before practicing these Pranayama, one must learn and practice deep breathing, fast breathing, alternate nostril breathing, Bandhas (Jalandhar bandha or chin lock, moola bandha and Uddiyan bandha or abdominal lock)
Sun Salutation is very good exercise for people suffering from diabetes, it increases the blood supply to various parts of body, improving insulin administration in the body, it gives all the benefits of exercise .

DO`S AND DON`T IN DIABETES.
DO'S AND DONT`S

• Eat about the same amount of food each day.
• Eat at about the same times each day.
• Take your medicines at the same times each day.
• Exercise at the same times each day.
• Every day, choose foods from these food groups: starches, vegetables, fruit, meat and meat substitutes, and milk and yogurt. How much of each depends on how many calories you need a day.
• Limit the amounts of fats and sweets you eat each day.

• Don't fry foods instead bake, boil, poach or sauté in a nonstick pan. Steam or microwave vegetables. Buy tuna packed in water, not oil
• Eat less high-fat red meat and more low-fat turkey and fish. Avoid organ meats
• Limit the use of condiments such as ketchup, mustard and salad dress ion--they're high in salt and can be high in sugar, too
• Rinse processed foods in water and, wherever possible, choose fresh foods over canned
• Limit your salt (sodium content)

ADVANTAGES OF LAPAROSCOPY - A BRIEF IDEA
What Are The Advantages Of Laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is easier on the patient because it uses a few very small incisions. For example, traditional "open surgery" on the abdomen usually requires a four- to five-inch incision through layers of skin and muscle. In laparoscopic surgery, the doctor usually makes two to three incisions that are about a half-inch long
The smaller incisions cause less damage to body tissue, organs, and muscles so that the patient
•can go home sooner.
Depending on the kind of surgery, patients may be able to return home a few hours after the operation, or after a brief stay in the hospital.
•recovers quickly.
Many people can return to work and their normal routine three to five days after surgery. In contrast, traditional laparotomy may require a person to limit daily activities for four to eight weeks.
•experiences fewer post-operative complications and less pain.
The amount of discomfort varies with the kind of surgery. In most cases, however, patients feel little soreness from the incisions, which heal within a few days. Most need little or no pain medicine.
•has less scaring.
The incisions for most kinds of laparoscopic surgery heal without noticeable scars. In laparoscopic surgery on a woman's reproductive system, for instance, one incision usually can be hidden in the belly button area. The others can be placed low in the abdomen, where any scars would be covered by a bikini.
There are a number of advantages to the patient with laparoscopic surgery versus an open procedure. These include:
•reduced blood loss, which reduces the chance of needing a blood transfusion.
•smaller incision, which reduces pain and shortens recovery time.
•less pain, leading to less pain medication needed.
•Although procedure times are usually slightly longer, hospital stay is less, and often with a same day discharge which leads to a faster return to everyday living.
•reduced exposure of internal organs to possible external contaminants thereby reduced risk of acquiring infections.
•can be used in Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) surgery to put the eggs back into the fallopian tube

Tips to Prevent Voice Problems
· Limit your intake of drinks that include alcohol or caffeine.
· Drink plenty of water. Six to eight glasses a day is recommended.
· Don't smoke and avoid second-hand smoke.
· Cancer of the vocal cords is seen most often in individuals who smoke.
· Practice good breathing techniques when singing or talking.
· Avoid eating spicy foods.
· Try not to overuse your voice. Avoid speaking or singing when your voice is hoarse.
· Wash your hands often to prevent colds and flu.
· Get enough rest. Physical fatigue has a negative effect on voice.
· Avoid talking in noisy places. Trying to talk above noise causes strain on the voice.
· Avoid mouthwash or gargles that contain alcohol or irritating chemicals.
· Avoid using mouthwash to treat persistent bad breath. Halitosis (bad breath) may be the result of a problem that mouthwash can't cure, such as low grade infections in the nose, sinuses, tonsils, gums, or lungs, as well as from gastric reflux from the stomach.

IS WALKING GOOD ENOUGH FOR WEIGHT LOSS?
Consuming fewer calories is often the most effective way to lose weight. Still, an increase in physical activity is an important part of any weight-loss program. And walking is a great way to get started. For motivation, do the math: To lose 1 pound, one must burn 3,500 calories. If one cut 250 calories from your daily diet, one could lose that pound in about two weeks. If you add 30 minutes of brisk walking to your daily routine, you could burn another 150 calories a day. Make that 60 minutes of brisk walking and you could burn about 300 calories a day. Of course, the more you walk and the quicker the pace, the more calories you'll burn. Keep it up and you'll walk your way to a healthy weight. Better yet, walking can help you keep the weight off for good.

IS CONSTIPATION TROUBLING YOU ?
Most cases of constipation respond to conservative treatment such as dietary and lifestyle changes or mild laxatives. here are the tips ----

Dietary changes include getting enough of the recommended daily amount of fiber (20 to 35 grams), drinking 64 ounces of water or juice a day, and limiting foods that have little or no fiber, such as ice cream, cheese, meat and processed foods.

Lifestyle changes consist of exercising, reserving enough time to have a bowel movement and having a bowel movement when needed. The above two measures have cured 90% of my patients.

Next measure is to use laxatives----
Laxatives may be recommended if the above changes did not help the constipation.

There are four types of laxatives - bulk-forming, stimulant, lubricant and saline. Bulk-forming laxatives, increase the volume of feces, making them softer and easier to pass. Stimulant laxatives, such as Dulcolax, Purge, stimulate the intestinal wall to contract. Lubricant laxatives, such as mineral oil, soften the stool so it is easier to pass. Saline laxatives, such as Milk of Magnesia, Citrate of Magnesia and Haley's M-O, increase the concentration of salts within the feces.

Other treatment methods may include:

Bowel retraining - may provide relief for people who have gotten into the habit of ignoring the urge. If a tight schedule has produced a tight sphincter, it may help to sit on a toilet, with book in hand, about 20 minutes each morning to encourage a return of reflexes that have disappeared. Straining is not recommended, since it may lead to tightening of muscles that should be relaxed for comfortable defecation.

Rectal suppositories - helpful in providing lubrication and in stimulating the defecation reflex. They are usually composed of glycerin, which is sometimes blended with sodium sterate, a fatty acid. Bisacodyl-containing suppositories have added potency, because they act directly on the bowel to stimulate emptying.

Enemas - usually become attractive only when oral laxatives cannot do the job. Introducing water into the colon helps to stimulate defecation. "Disposable" enemas deliver a solution of highly concentrated, nonabsorbable salts into the rectum and sigmoid colon. These salts attract an outpouring of fluid into the bowel and thus promote bowel contraction. Oil-containing enemas are sometimes recommended as softeners for feces that have become hardened within the rectum.

Biofeedback - may be recommended for people with chronic constipation caused by anorectal dysfunction. Biofeedback involves using a sensor to monitor muscle activity displayed on a computer screen allowing for accurate assessment of body functions. With this information, the doctor helps the person learn how to use the anorectal muscles.

Surgery - Surgical removal of the colon may be an option for people with severe symptoms caused by colonic inertia (lack of movement in the colon) and unremitting extreme constipation. it is done when all other measures fails.

DIABETES LEADING TO HEART DISEASE,SOME PREVENTIVE MEASURES.
If you have diabetes, you're at increased risk of heart disease and stroke. That's because diabetes can accelerate the development of clogged and hardened arteries. Here's where heart-healthy eating becomes part of your diabetes diet.

Get no more than 7 percent of your daily calories from saturated fat, and try to avoid trans fat completely. The best way to reduce your intake of saturated and trans fats is to limit the amount of solid fat — butter, margarine and shortening — you add to food when cooking and serving. Use low-fat substitutions when possible. For example, top your baked potato with salsa or low-fat yogurt rather than butter, or use sugar-free fruit spread on your toast instead of margarine.

When you do use fat, u should choose monounsaturated fats — such as oilive. Polyunsaturated fats, found in nuts and seeds, are a healthier choice also When used in place of saturated fat, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats may help lower your total blood cholesterol. But moderation is essential. All types of fat are high in calories. so u should take care of that..
