Blood Transfusion in Blood Cancer

Cancer referred as an abnormal cells that develops and divides very quickly and also it affects the production and function of your blood cells. These cancer cells often originate from the bone marrow where the blood is produced. Blood cells divided into three types which are red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets.

Amid the Blood Cancer, normal blood cell development is interrupted due to the uncontrolled growth of any abnormal type of blood cell.

These cancer cells prevents our body in performing the normal body functions such as fighting against infections or preventing serious bleeding.

There are various blood cancer treatments for treating the cancer which mainly includes -

  1. Surgery - Which use to remove these abnormal or cancerous cells and surrounding tissue.

  2. Radiotherapy - In order to treat the cancer, radiotherapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells or cease their growth.

  3. Chemotherapy - It uses medications to destroy the cancer cells or cease their growth.

  4. Candrol -  It is a 4th modality blood cancer treatment available only in India.

Blood Transfusion

It refers to the process of receiving blood or blood products into one’s circulation used for various medical conditions which replace the lost components of the blood.

But why do cancer patients need this

Surgery is the primary method to treat the cancer and Blood transfusion is needed because of the Blood lost during surgery as well as it use to compensate the side effects of chemotherapy which affects the cancerous cell and normal cells both.  The Chemotherapy drug is unable to distinguish between good and bad cells.

Chemotherapy not only affects fast growing normal cells but it also affects the Bone marrow where these blood cells are produced. This interruption to the bone marrow due to the chemotherapy decrease the patient’s ability to produce new blood cells and not able to replace the normal blood cells that have destroyed with this treatment. It results into continuous dropping of of blood cells and this made necessary the transfusion of red cells and or platelets.

Blood Transfusion helps the patients in managing symptoms which they may experience due to the low blood cell counts and continue their cancer treatment.

Cancer treatment for the Leukaemia and Lymphoma have an adverse effect on the patients health as due to the abnormal blood cells, their own blood cells are not functioning properly and the cancer treatment also affects their ability to produce sufficient healthy blood cells.

These treatments lead to their blood counts get very low, making them vulnerable for the life threatening infections and bleeding. Often doctors can continue their cancer treatment only and only when a patient goes through the blood transfusion.

With the help of different approaches, doctors decide whether Blood transfusion is appropriate or not.
