Monday marks the 49th annual Earth Day – a global event to celebrate Mother Nature and put environmental issues in the spotlight.About a billion people worldwide mark it each year by signing petitions, writing to MPs, planting trees or cleaning up their neighbourhoods.

United States Senator Gaylord Nelson came up with the idea for Earth Day after seeing the devastation caused by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, which killed more than 3500 birds off the coast of California. The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, was marked by 22 million Americans who marched to protest against damage done to the environment. That event led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passing of a raft of environmental legislation.

In the years since, Earth Day has spread worldwide and is now celebrated in more than 190 countries worldwide.Marlborough's Jasmine Mooiman takes an electric ride-on car for a spin at a 2018 Earth Day party.
In the past, New Zealand has hosted Earth Day festivals, clean-up events and environmental workshops

The theme for Earth Day 2019 is 'Protect Our Species'.

It aims to draw attention to the rapid extinction of species across the world, which is directly linked to human activity which causes climate change, deforestation and pollution.
Sudan, the last northern white rhino, died in 2018. Three bird species also went extinct that year.
The Earth Day Network – which runs Earth Day – says 40 per cent of the world's 11,000 bird species are in decline and 75 per cent of the world's coral reefs are under stress.

It is encouraging its supporters to take individual actions to slow the extinction rate, including going vegetarian or stopping their use of pesticides and herbicides. There are a number of small Earth Day events planned across the country.

In Auckland, St Andrew's Anglican Church in Pukekohe will host a carbon-negative event, including a climate Q&A forum and children's games and activities, on April 27. Footbridge Estate for Innovation and Sustainability in Bombay will host a similar event the following day.

In Blenheim, Climate Karanga Marlborough will host a family picnic on April 28 at Pollard Park with games, a scavenger hunt and information about our native species and the Predator Free programme. In Picton, Waikawa Dive Centre is hosting a volunteer dive on Monday to clean up the ocean floor.

In Dunedin, Earth Day marks the start of the week-long Festival of Nature. There are photo competitions, seminars, tree planting days, bug hunts, puppet shows and documentary screenings.People can help boost bee populations, which are threatened by pesticides, climate change and a loss of biodiversity, by planting bee-friendly gardens.
The Earth Day Network has issued a list of actions people can take to tackle climate change and protect the environment to save species across the world. They include switching sunscreen to protect coral, organising or joining a beach clean-up and tracking and reducing their plastic waste.

People are also encouraged to plant trees, switch to reusable bags or create a bee-friendly garden.Further tips include using public transport to cut emissions, buying energy-efficient appliances and electronics and supporting sustainable fisheries.
