Now a days it is seen a practice that where mostly pathologist in rural or semi urban areas or even in cities open any franchisee lab or work at many hospitals or clinic by appointing their subordinates as junior trainee doctor or mostly technicians who are qualified or unqalified but trained ,they do all work and put name of consultant with no signature in computer report or digitally signed signature or simple signature of that pathologist who may have a mbbs degree or diploma or master degree. Many labs even few best names having transaction of hundred thousand crores are run by Persons as doctor having phd degree after obtaining MSc or master or basic degree in Biochemistry,Microbiology,Pathology. But as it is not legal as per MCI that they can sign reports so they hire pathologist, microbiologist, radiologist and biochemist who rn their multiple labs in differnt part of country by sitting at one place through digital signatures.
May radiologist also work in this way many top labs in country hire these reporting doctors in this way and as they are big shots ,they hardly care repercussion against such illegal work as many big hospitals with these radiologists, pathologists, microbiologist and biochemist openly advertise in local radio, newspaper, social, print and electronic media regarding the great work they do as their facilities with these renowned names to catch patients. Many such consultants run their own setup sitting in one centre and report with their name without undergoing personal examination of procedure or specimen or patient.
But recently a Nashik-based pathologist has been suspended for signing reports at several laboratories despite being a full-time faculty at a dental college. The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) said that Dr. Sanjay Shinde was found to be attached to multiple laboratories within a 30 to 160 km radius.MMC president, Dr. Shivkumar Utture, said that pathologists are required to supervise the tests and the reports personally before signing them. However, in this case, the pathologist neither supervised nor interpreted the findings in reports on which his signatures were present.
Dr. Parsad Kulkarni, executive member of the Maharashtra Association of Practicing Pathologists and Microbiologists (MAPPM), said that this case was a clear example where a pathologist has lent his signature to multiple labs. Dr. Kulkarni said that Dr. Shinde was found to be attached to nearly 25 laboratories. This is troubling as the course of treatment for patients depends on the laboratory reports. Dr. Kulkarni added that this is the fifth suspension of a pathologist in similar cases since 2016. He stated that at least four more such complaints filed by them are pending with the MMC.
Till yestarday we had limited infrastructure with limited media so mostly such illegal work was being carried on but now a days with vibrant media and particularly with social media and net and camera with everyone and tight competition among Doctors will further expose such incidences openly so it is wise that as Pathologist, Microbiologist,Biochemist and Radiologist or Radiotherapist we donot lent our signature to any lab or diagnostic centre whether it is our franchisee or we wrok there as without physically examining a report, signature will be considered a fake one and we should avoid it.
