Flaxseed or linseed or alsi.or tishi...people call it by many names. In each and every health column, nutrition websites, lots of flaxseed products like flaxseed chutney, flaxseed bread on shelves, and more over all dietitian and nutritionist recommendation for flaxseed.....SO WHATS SO GR8 ABOUT THIS OILSEED.....LES FIND OUT Flaxseed is one of the richest vegetarian source of Omega 3, an essential fatty acid which is not produced in our body and has to be taken through dietary sources. Omega 3 plays a very important role in our body. Helps keep heart healthy, maintains neuro muscular activity, muscle integrity, prevents cataract and post menopausal problems. Another unknown feature of flaxseed is LIGNANS....lignans are compounds which have estrogen like property which shows a beneficial role in pre and post menaupausal problems, regulation of menstrual cycle, PCOS and RA. FIBER< FIBER ....everone talks aout it a lot in todays eating pattern...FLAXSEED contains 2/3 rd insoluble and 1/3 soluble fiber making it a potential source of dietary fiber. FLaxseed when added to chappati dough or any other flour called in for the recipe,required double the amount of water than the control sample. flaxseed absorbs a lot of water and thus increases the product yield. it also retains moisture through out the baking procedure. Last but not the least, FLaxseed also contains good amount of protein with all essential amino acids. Flaxseed has been proven to be very good remedy for PILES treatment. So to maintain optimum omega 6 : omega 3 ratio (as most of us are not able to maintain)consume 1 tea sp of flax seed (whole , ground flaxseed, add into mukhwas, roti dal) every day and be healthy... thanks you sir for going through my blog and putting your inputs
1. Glycosides are definately present in flaxseeds. it can harm anyone only if someone is consuming around 80 kgs a month. thats next 2 imposiible!!! so takind 1 tesp daily is not a t all harmful

2. i agree to the fact that flaxseed absorbs water due to presence of good amount of fiber in it. but if taken during morning on e drinks enough water throughout the day. also a teasp of flaxseed will never cause such a problem. flaxseed does not reduce appetite, in fact it also acts as a good laxative

thats true cooking in flaxseed oil i not recommended sue to its flavour and also the smoke point of the oil is very low- 107 degree Celcius.
so it is better to consume seeds rather than oil. because you dont miss the fiber, lignan and protein part of seed along with omega 3 benefit of oil. flaxseed oil is recommended in critical conditions where requirement of omega 3 increases like patients on RT feeding in burn cases, kidney patients etc.

madam shivani Lodha,
it is nice to read your blog on flax seed. I am ayurvedic Doctor and i had read while i was student that its seeds contain some glycosides on consumtion of which animals may die. is it true
secondly consumption of its seeds with lesser amount of water may cause intestinal obstruction and it also reduces the appetite of the person.
third here people use to make pinni [ ladoo ] in winter and they advise never to take more than one in a day as it is very hot in its effect. this can increase your hypertension and cause abdominal upset and vertigo.
my last question for clarification is whether is it better to consume oil or seeds , in what dose for a normal being. I believe cooking with linseed oil is never recommended.
