VADODARA: Aspiring urologists
in the country will now get a global advantage with American Urological
Association (AUA) helping Urological Society of India (USI) to set up an
education cell. This was shared by Dr Gopal Badlani, first Indian elected as
the Secretary-Elect of the prestigious AUA during his visit to Jayaramdas
Patel Academic Centre (JPAC) in Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH) in
Nadiad.
Badlani is professor and vice-chairman of the Department of Urology at Wake
Forest University. He along with team of doctors at MPUH are conducting
prospective study on Turp and Bipolar Vaporisation surgery for Benign Prostatic
Hyperplasia (BPH), a condition developed at old age in men.
Talking about the cell Badlani told TOI, "Medical education in India is
not uniform. Through this cell, we are looking at conducting teaching
programmes, review curriculum and help USI to provide education on best medical
practices in urology offered at global level. AUA's motive is to reach out to
people in other countries and share knowledge. As an Indian in the body, I will
be extending all possible help to USI."
Badlani also said that there is a need to provide web-based curriculum to
residents. "We need to have modules for medical students which they can
access from anywhere. This in a way will create uniformity in educational
content delivered and taught to them across the country. Even government
hospitals need to standardise their facilities and treatment," added
Badlani, who was felicitated by MPUH on his appointment in AUA.
"We are doing a joint exercise in doing prospective study on turp and
bipolar vaporisation surgery. Both hospitals will conduct 60 surgeries each to
see the efficiency of this surgical process over the laser treatment which is
costlier than the one which is being tested," medical director of MPUH Dr
Mahesh Desai said.
