Dr. Mahesh Desai of MPUH Nadiad assumes Office of the President of SIU

First Indian to be elected to this prestigious world body of Urologists

At a glittering ceremony, attended by a large number of Urologists and medical professionals from around the world, Dr. Mahesh Desai, Medical Director and Managing Trustee of MPUH, Nadiad was installed as the President of the Societe Internationale d'Urologie (SIU) at its 31st World Congress held in Berlin, Germany, during October 16-20, 2011.  SIU was founded in Paris in 1907 and serves its members from its new premises in Montreal, Canada.  For the last two years, Dr. Desai was the President-Elect of the SIU.  Dr. Desai is the first Indian to be elected to this prestigious position.

Dr Mahesh Desai obtained his medical education from B J Medical College, Pune University. He completed his M S in General Surgery from Pune University in the year 1970.  He received fellowship (FRCS) from the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Edinburgh in 1973.  In UK, he obtained specialized training in Urology, joined hands with Dr V V Desai and established Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital in rural Nadiad. He was the Chairman of the Department of Urology, MPUH, Nadiad until a year ago. He is now the Medical Director and the Managing Trustee of the Hospital. Dr Desai has adapted the most modern treatment for the stone disease, and developed innovative techniques in Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy (PCNL), Ureteroscopy and ESWL. He has done more than 11000 PCNL, probably the largest series in the world. He expanded the use of ultrasound in Urology and established the service of kidney transplantation in Gujarat. He did his first kidney transplant in 1980, the first in Gujarat.  Dr. Mahesh Desai has received several awards and recognitions including B C Roy National Award from the President of India.
