Dr Jagat Ram is presently working as Professor in the department of Ophthalmology at P.G.I. M.E.R, Chandigarh.
He was awarded WHO fellowship in the field of Phacoemulsification at Storm Eye Institute, Charleston, USA, 1993-1994 and another Fellowship in “Advanced phacoemulsification techniques and Pediatric Cataract Surgery” in 1998. He introduced phacoemulsification surgery for the first time at PGI (1994) and Republic of Seychelles (2004). His work on “Posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery and in-the-bag fixation of intraocular lenses” received WHO award for best research work. He was invited to write Guest Editorials for Ophthalmology in 1999 and for Indian Journal (2000). He is author of the a complete Issue of a prestigious International Review Journal “ Survey Ophthalmology on “ Elimination of cataract blindness: A global perspective in 2000. He has published a unique textbook on “Pediatric Cataract Surgery” in 2007.
He has over 168 publications in the national and international Journals with over 796 citations. He organized first ever Skill Transfer Course Phaco (Wet Lab) during AIOS conference held at P.G.I, Chandigarh, 1996. He was invited as a guest faculty at the Teaching Miyake-Apple wet Lab organized at Boston (USA) in 1994 and at San Diego in 1998 during Am Soc. of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Meetings. He has delivered over 226 guest lectures. He was awarded Dr Daljit Singh Gold Medal (2001) for significant contribution in the field of phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation at the Indian Intraocular and Refractive Society. He completed two years deputation as ITEC Expert and consultant Ophthalmologist to Republic of Seychelles where cataract surgical backlog was eliminated. He is reviewer for Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, American Academy Journal such as Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Surgery and Lasers and Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Prof Jagat Ram is has been awarded FAMS (Fellowship of National Academy of Medical Sciences , India) for the year 2008 for his work on Cataract surgery (Phacoemulsification) and especially cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation in children.
