HOWRAH is the twin city of Kolkata located on the banks of River Ganges /Hooghly. It is West Bengal's second largest city in terms of both area and population. The 2 cities are connected by 4 bridges. Often termed as Sheffield of the East, Howrah is known today as a hub of heavy engineering industry. Howrah is an important railway industrial hinterland housing many vital installations, sheds & depots of Eastern Railway. Howrah Coaching Yard complex is the largest Railway Coaching yard of India.
HOWRAH STATION is the second oldest station and one of the largest railway complexes in India. Trains from this station serve the Kolkata urban area, the state of West Bengal and most major cities of India. It has 23 platforms which handle over three hundred trains each day, serving more than a million passengers.
HOWRAH ORTHOPEDIC HOSPITAL was established in the year 1950 as a mere Health Unit to look after the railway employees. In the year 1966, this Health Unit was upgraded to a 50 bedded Hospital and since then it has gradually prospered to attain the present status of Super Speciality Orthopaedic Care Center of Indian Railways.
Now it has 179 beds with a modern OT & functions as a Referral Hospital for all Zonal Railways and State Hospitals.

Achievements & Awards
Dr M S Ghosh joined the hospital in November 1969 as a Specialist Surgeon in Orthopedics and Trauma surgery and Surgeon Superintendent of the Hospital. By the sheer dedication and hard work of Dr Ghosh and with the active cooperation of his colleagues and sympathetic Railway administration, the hospital gradually grew in all spheres. Over the course of years more floors and blocks of wings were added to the existing structure and number of beds increased in strength to 179 with addition of Children ward, Plastic Reconstructive unit, Burn unit, Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Artificial Limb Centre, Occupational Therapy Unit, etc. equipped with trained personnel. Two modern Operation Theatre blocks with multiple OTs equipped with Laminar Air flow, CC TV, Image Intensifier, latest operating instruments and implants were set up way back in 1980s. The hospital grew in stature & importance every year and was recognized as the referral centre in the field of Orthopedics and trauma surgery for the Eastern Railway and also for the whole of Indian Railways. The hospital reached its fame and zenith in 1980-90 as recognition for its academic and professional excellence when the hospital was designated by the Railway Board as “Railway Orthopedic Institute and Research Centre, Howrah”. The Institute is considered as the Mecca of Orthopedic teaching and training and professional excellence of Eastern India. Batches of renowned orthopedic surgeons from India and also from UK, USA, France & Germany visited the Institute periodically for delivering lectures and arrange courses.
The hospital is the first in Indian Railway Medical Service to perform Osteosynthesis, Arthroscopy and Joint replacement.
